Vivian, The Fight Club

* * *

Wayne held my elbow and escorted me inside the parking garage to the cordoned-off area Snook used for his illegal fight club. Which was stupid. We had a perfectly good, quiet ambulance parked in the usual space.

“Let me go. This is ridiculous. I agreed to be here, not to sit inside and watch these idiots maul one another.”

Wayne shrugged. “Humor me. It’s not safe outside. Too much trouble brewing in the neighborhood.”

I stopped yanking on my arm and allowed my old friend to walk me to a secluded area nestled between both an exit and two of Snook’s fully armed security team. “I’d rather be in the rig.”

“Me too, but I got a bad feeling about tonight. Word is there have been some really odd things happening around here in the wee hours. And besides, Snook’s less likely to try to hurt your man if you’re here to watch.” Wayne waited for me to take a seat on a barstool and settled on one next to me.

The barstool wobbled, one leg shorter than the other three, and I wiggled back and forth like a kid as I considered Wayne’s words.

I hadn’t thought of the benefit of being inside, watching, but Wayne was right. I knew Snook and Maxus—the Wolf—had some personal drama. Hell, anyone who worked for Snook had some kind of personal stakes with the man. But I’d known Snook my whole life. He knew I was involved with Maxus, as in sleeping with him. He was a businessman first and always.

Losing me would be bad for business. Losing his Wolf—the best fighter he had—would be bad for business. I didn’t trust Snook’s personal choices, but I did trust his one true motivation: profit.

“Fine. I’ll sit here with you. But anything goes sideways and I’m out of here.”

“Sweetheart, I’ll lead the way to the door.” Wayne grinned at me, took out his pack of cigarettes, realized we were basically inside, and put them back in his pocket with a soft curse.

I laughed softly. “Thank you.”

“Turning into a goddamn woman, that’s what I’m doing.” Gruff words, but he couldn’t hide his grin. He leaned back until his shoulders made contact with the cold concrete of the parking garage. I followed his example, the cool, solid wall at my back making me feel better almost immediately.

“So, who’s fighting first?” I crossed my arms with a deep sigh.

“New fighters. Both of them. Skinny fuckers.”

The first fight was announced, and I had to agree with Wayne. The two fighters were barely more than boys, probably eighteen or nineteen, not fully formed. Too thin. Wiry but strong with a look of desperate hunger and relentless anger in their eyes. I knew the type. They would tear each other to pieces.

No problem. I had plenty of sutures and sterile needle drivers in my bag. Wayne had carried in the medical bag, and it rested at the base of my barstool, ready for action. I had just about everything I might need in that bag.
