“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

The Law is to be followed perfectly, every time. We can’t do that. As Christ tells us in the passage above, He is the only one who fulfills the Law perfectly. We have all broken one or more of these commandments and have been tempted to break several others! But we are still commanded to work heartily at upholding them through the strength and spirit of Christ (Philippians 4:13). And, when we fail (and we will), the only place to turn is to the One who is perfect in every way. Only through our faith in Christ and His perfect life do we have the desire and ability to live righteously and pursue Christlike (and ethical) behavior.

So, in accordance with our personal responsibility to pursue righteousness, let’s review some of these commandments in the context of our contemporary work environment. For example, some of us make an idol out of work. We are more consumed with a successful career than our relationship with Christ. On the flip side, some of us try to avoid hard work, and the thought of working more than we want is antithetical to our slothful attitude. Are we honoring our employer, who is the authority that God has placed over us? Are we guarding our relationships at work, so they don’t become more personal than they should? Do we work diligently, or do we cheat on timecards and expense reports? Have you taken company supplies home? Have you ever lied to your boss to cover a mistake? Are you envious of a co-worker’s position or pay to the point that you believe you are more worthy than they are?

Now, I know that you’re probably thinking, I thought this was about what to do when someone else is being unethical. We will get there, but Christ first commands us to pull the log out of our own eye before we can accurately confront someone else’s sin (Matthew 7:4-5). No one is perfect, and we are not above falling into the same sinful traps we are prepared to confront in others. That is important to remember as we prepare to judge and confront unethical behavior in the workplace.

Another important thing to remember is that each situation and circumstance involving the confrontation of unethical behavior is different. If you are not clear on what direction to take in a certain situation, find a personal contact who understands morality and ethics from a biblical, and even legal, perspective and can look at your situation objectively.
