Chapter 12

Serenity lay in bed most of the day until it was dark. It seemed as if her body had grown accustomed to the nightlife. Her isolation was numbing. Trini threw everything at her to keep her busy: iPad, iPod, Mac, anything to keep her occupied. Most of her time was spent counting money or helping Trini out with the girls Iris sent. After their last conversation before Iris took off on another trip, she was able to make some money of her own. But because Iris allowed it that didn’t mean Trini accepted it.

Hoping and praying that Trini’s little fling would come by and scoop her up so she could get some alone time, Serenity’s prayer was answered; Johnny showed up.

“Yo, Trini, Johnny out front,” she yelled out.

“Yeah, tell ’im ah comin’,” she shouted back from her bedroom.

She didn’t bother to wave him a hold-up sign; she watched him park in front and heard his horn twice. Serenity was looking forward to some alone time. No girls were there to look after or console. No money to count. It was bittersweet, being alone with all this money, but knowing that running would only speed up her death or incarceration. She felt comfortable enough to stay. Every means of escape was there, but her urge to leave drifted as her days became weeks and the money started to pile up. She had all the good things for anyone in this lifestyle: money, sex, and all the drugs anyone could have.

Serenity did what she was told and knew her role. Trini and Iris both knew her limits and boundaries. She was never forced into having a date, although Serenity was curious about it all. After talking to the girls most of the times she heard good things: trips, shopping sprees, parties, and even the sex at times. Although there were times when horror stories would be heard and that’s when Serenity would quietly leave the room or just stay out of sight to let Trini handle it.

She watched the differences in how Trini did her thing with the girls and Iris’s way. Trini was very straightforward, either you going to get down or not. Iris on the other hand showed the money and glamour; then they would just do it ’cause it was easy. But there was one thing they both agreed on: whoever worked for them had to take a trip at least once a month to Mexico with Iris. Trini never went ’cause her ass didn’t have a green card, just a working visa. This drove Iris nuts ’cause every three months she had to go back to Trinidad, just so the stamp on her passport didn’t expire.

Trini walked out of her bedroom and toward Serenity sitting on the sofa. “Why ya don’t come? Yeah, yeah, c’mon g’wan get dress. Ya goin’,” she stated firmly.

“Nah, I don’t feel well,” Serenity said as she wrapped hers hands around her stomach, bending her head.

“Please”—Trini sucked her teeth long and hard—“ya wan’ me to get ya dress?” Trini tilted her head.
