Preparation for Benzodiazepine Detox at Home

Find a place inside where there's joy, and the joy will burn out the pain. -Joseph Campbell

If you are planning to detox from Benzos at home, be sure to review the general home detox guide earlier in this section about putting together a detox plan and setting up some support. Aside from that, you'll need to make some special preparations with respect to detoxing from Benzos at home.

Prepare the Environment

It would be at this point that I would generally tell you to take some time off of work, send the kids away and rent a bunch of movies to pass the time that you will be "holed up" in your home. Not so in this case. In fact, if you are going to need to take some time off and "lay low", it may not be until the very end of the process where you are actually removing the long-acting Valium from your body and may feel crummy and very tired for several days. In general, if you are sticking to a nice slow, long tapering schedule, you should be able to continue with your daily schedule of activities, including work. Don't expect life to be "fun" for awhile, but it should be manageable and safe. That's the point of doing this slowly.
