the devil’s downfall

We step out of the fires that allow us freedom to travel between the surface and the depths of Hell, the ash sticking annoyingly to my skin. As I step onto the black stone flooring of Lucifer’s palace, my nose is filled with the familiar scent of sulfur. Before I have the chance to look around, Ambrose marches into the room.

Ambrose is the demon Lucifer leaves in charge when we’re up on the surface. While he’s a lesser demon, he’s proven time and time again to be a valuable member of Lucifer's circle. He’s not worthy enough to be brought into his court, but he’s worthy enough to be trusted with the largest of tasks.

While tall in his own regard, the top of his head barely reaches my shoulders. He’s clumsy with any form of weapon, but his words have helped most of us out of more trouble than I can recount in the millennia since he appeared in Hell.

“My lord,” he says, bowing in the presence of Lucifer before turning to face me. His bow this time doesn’t reach as far, but it holds an equal level of respect. “General Nox.”

“Hello, Ambrose. Anything to report?” Lucifer asks the man as we walk further into the palace.

He trots to keep up with the speed of our long strides. “Nothing out of the ordinary. We have received sixty thousand new souls this week. All have been sorted accordingly.”

For as long as I can recall, souls have been coming to the gates of Hell feeling lost and discarded, lied to by the men on the surface who believe themselves better than any other human, men who use their ability to elicit total cooperation from those weaker than them. According to them, if the weak give themselves over to their “God,” He’ll in turn repay them with an eternal life of happiness in Heaven.

Yeah fucking right.

It isn’t until these souls end up with us that they finally realize the magnitude of their naiveté. Our creator doesn’t care about repentance. He cares about power, and as long as the humans revere Him and fear Lucifer, there is nothing that will take that power away.

Lucifer tries his best to make Hell comfortable for the souls tossed here. The first four levels of his kingdom deal with the lesser offenders, souls who once belonged to people that, given a little more cooperation on their end, may have ended up somewhere else. These souls are allowed to move about the kingdom, free to do as they please.

The lower you go, the worse the beings become. The bottom level is home to the souls of humans who committed sins even Lucifer finds repulsive, the level where the cracks begin to form. The level we cannot let break loose.

“Nox?” Lucifer’s loud voice breaks me out of my thoughts, and I shake my head quickly before looking up at him.

I move my hands behind my back, my feet spreading as I give him my full attention. “Yes, my lord?”

“Relax the formalities, Nox.
