Cari met her mother in the kitchen bright and early the next morning. She didn’t feel like going out, but it was something she’d do for her mom. Her parents had been very helpful the last several weeks, and Cari didn’t want to disappoint either of them or give them a reason to worry about her.

“Good morning,” Cari said to no one in particular as she walked in and went directly to the coffeepot. She needed a good dose of caffeine. She poured herself a large cup of the fragrant brew.

“Kids, remember that Grandpa will be here when you get home today. I know it’s the last day of school, so please put your book bags in your rooms before you have a snack. Grandma and I will be home in plenty of time for dinner.”

Dad jostled Shane’s arm. “Your mom thinks we’ll fall apart this afternoon.”

“Yeah, I know. But we have everything under control, don’t we, Grandpa?”

“We sure do, Shane.”

Dad turned his attention to his daughter. “Cari when the kids get home today, we’re going to go out to do a little shopping ourselves. So, if you try to call and there’s no answer, don’t worry. And then, tomorrow, we’re going to all go pick out a Christmas tree. Is Snow’s Tree Farm still open?”

Dad looked around the table at the kids as they smiled and nodded.

“Yes, they’re open, and we usually get our tree there,” Cari assured them all.

“Grandpa, can we be the first ones there tomorrow?” Kate wanted to know.

“Of course, we can, and we’ll take a thermos of hot chocolate. It’s thirsty work, picking out the perfect tree and all.”

“That sounds like a great idea, Dad. Remember, you guys be good for Grandpa today, and remember to buckle up when you get in the car,” Cari admonished them.

“Don’t worry, Mom. We’ll remember everything. You don’t have to say it a zillion times!” Kate said. “We’ll make sure Ellie is buckled up. Just have fun with Gram.”

The kids hurried for the bus, anxious to get the last day of class over with, whispering to their grandfather on their way out the door.

“Dad, what was that all about?” Cari asked.

“Christmas secrets, my dear, Christmas secrets. Now, you and your mother run along. I’ll hold down the fort for the day.” Dad was doing his best to reassure his worrywart daughter.
