CHAPTER 11

***STEVE***

The fire was burning down, but Steve didn’t want to move. Chloe was curled up under the sleeping bag with him, and for the first time in days, his mind and body were both calm. All the tension and uncertainty had drained away the moment he realized that she was his, and now laying with her naked skin pressed up against his, her hair tickling his chest, he just wanted to enjoy the beginning of what he knew was going to be a lifetime of loving her.

Smiling because he turned into one of those men, he lifted his head and looked down at Chloe, overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude. She looked up at him. “What did we just do?” she asked. “I felt something...I don’t know, I can’t explain it.”

“It’s the bond I was telling you about,” he said. “Until Matt had it happen to him, we all thought it was just...well, a legend or something, but I guess it’s real. You don’t mind, do you?”

“No, I mean, I don’t think so, but you didn’t really explain what it means,” she said. “I know I said I didn’t care...”

“It’s not complicated,” he said, then hesitated. “Basically, it means that we’ll want each other for the rest of our lives, sort of like we’re tied together with an invisible chain.”

She was quiet for so long, he started to get worried. “Is that why I could feel what you were feeling earlier?” she finally asked. “That’s what really made up my mind. I was pretty sure before, but then...”

He smiled down at her. “I’m not exactly an expert,” he said. “I think we’re going to have to figure this out as we go.”

“What about the legend?” Chloe asked. “What does it say?”

“I don’t really remember the details, but it has something to do with the fact that we’re wolf shifters specifically,” he said. “As human as we are, there are some aspects of the wolf that rule our behavior. We feel most comfortable when we have a social group or a clan, we’re suspicious of outsiders, and I guess most important to us, we mate for life. But you didn’t answer my question.”

Chloe grinned up at him. “Sorry, I got sidetracked,” she said, then reached up and stroked his cheek. “No, I don’t mind. This has all been a bit...eye opening but wonderful. You’re just going to have to give me a little time to catch up. There’s something that’s still bothering me, though. I still haven’t remembered why I’m here or what I was doing out there that night.”

Steve laid back down and pulled her back into his arms. “I’m sure it will come back soon,” he said. “And if it doesn’t, I think we know enough now to find out.”

She was silent for a second. “What if I don’t remember because I’m a terrible person or something?” she finally asked. “I blocked that night because it was frightening. I can’t help but think I don’t remember the rest because.
