Chapter Fifteen:

My mind blanks out as the darkness consumes me. Before I can panic, I'm standing on a beach in front of the most beautiful lake I have ever seen.

“Breathe Eve!”

I hear myself gasp and I bend over with my hands on my knees trying to catch my breath. I can feel Tavish rubbing my back gently as he is still holding me steady. “What just happened?”

“Wasn’t it fun?” Tavish bent down so he could look me in the face. His smile once again makes my heart skip. I can feel his sudden happiness through our link.

“We need to work on what fun means mister. I’ll admit it’s the best transportation out there. What I wouldn’t have done to be able to do this weeks ago. How far are we from the Manor and will I be able to do this?”

I watch as Tavish walks towards the water. He bends over and picks up a rock skipping it across the water. “We’re only a few miles from home. I have always called it flashing. I feel like we kinda flash from one place to another. Like a flash of lightning or the flash on a camera.”

“Where are we?”

“We own thousands of acres around here and I hated being confined to the house when I was little, so I started exploring around the property. I found this lake one night and afterwards, I came here a lot. I have always liked to sit here and watch the moon rays glisten on top of the water. I have never seen a sunrise or been able to watch the sun sparkle on the waves. This is as close as I’ll ever get to that and the silence is soothing when my world is crazy.”

“Does that make you sad, not being able to go out in the light, I mean?”

“Not at all actually, well maybe when I was younger, but I have found way too many enjoyments in the night to ever dwell on the things I can’t change.”

“How do you know where you’re going to end up at when you flash as you call it? What keeps you from landing somewhere right in the middle of the day.”

“Lots of practice actually, I feel like I have an internal sense of time. To tell the truth it’s always dark somewhere.”

I suddenly sense something moving in the water. It is sending a warning out to the other animals in the area that there is danger on the bank. “Tavish come away from the water, something is wrong.”

He doesn’t even question me but is immediately standing at my side. “What is it, what do you see, or feel?”

“Stay here.”

I walk to the edge of the water and squat down. I see movement a few feet out. Suddenly it rises up out of the water, its slim powerful body standing straight up as its fangs glisten in the moonlight. It moves its head back and forth looking at me. I can see my own reflection in its glowing yellow eyes.
