Chapter Four

The whole academy was a raucous celebration, but celebrating was the last thing Caroline felt like doing as she stood in a small, windowless room, where Felicity, Fleur, Vale, and Zara were laid out before her. She didn’t bother to wipe the tears that still spilled over her cheeks, wondering if she could have done something differently to save her friends.

“Caroline?” Aldrick asked from the doorway. She turned and looked over her shoulder, giving him a sad smile.

“Can I join you, or do you want to be left alone?” he asked.

“Of course you can come in. Though I thought you’d want to be celebrating with everyone else,” Caroline replied.

Aldrick shrugged as he walked in, his hands shoved into the front pockets of his jeans. “I just wanted to talk to you. About what happened.”

“What do you mean?” Caroline looked up at him, her brow furrowed.

“When you kissed me on the athletic field, I guessed it was in the heat of the moment. You know, like we might die and never kiss again. But that wasn’t the case, was it?”

Caroline chewed on her lower lip as she tried to think about how to answer, but Aldrick took her hesitation as confirmation.

“If it was just about the prophecy, I get it. You wanted to do whatever it took to get justice for your family, and I can’t blame you for that,” he said, looking at the floor.

“It wasn’t that—not entirely. Of course, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t partly to do with the prophecy. I had no idea what to expect when I started kissing you, and I certainly didn’t expect it to go down the way it did. But I’ve been drawn to you from the very first day I laid eyes on you—long before I’d even heard of the prophecy. I know it doesn’t seem like it. I’ve been so unfair to both you and Corbin,” Caroline tried to explain as she reached out and placed her hand on his arm.

“I kissed you, at that moment, because I wanted to. I wanted to kiss you, and even if nothing had happened to me, I wouldn’t have changed it. I adore you, Aldrick.” She reached up on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek. “Do you believe me?”

He turned and gave her a rueful smile. “I suppose so. But now that it’s all said and done am I still the one you want to be with?”

“Absolutely,” she confirmed, smiling as Aldrick bent his head toward her and kissed her firmly. Caroline kissed him back, despite the image of Corbin that flashed before her. She cast it aside, knowing if he were the one she’d chosen, it would be Aldrick’s image she saw instead. Caroline knew she had to resign herself to the fact that she loved both of them, and her heart would never solely belong to one or the other. They quickly broke apart as they both clasped their tattooed wrists. Caroline looked down to see the tattoo once again glowing.
