Ride a summer bobsled

AUSTRIA

WHY NOW The Olympic bobsled run opens for summer fun now

WHERE Igls, Innsbruck

DATES July and August

In 1976 the Olympic Winter Games journeyed to the Austrian city of Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol region. Here, high above the city in the ski resort of Igls, a bobsled track snaked like plumbing across the Alpine slopes. A few days of competition and the world moved on, leaving Igls and its track to slide into history. Or not. Igls decided to throw its track open to the public. Bobsled runs behind professional drivers quickly became a winter favourite; more recently, summer visitors have been able to climb aboard, with wheels replacing runners for two months of the year.

The summer bob might be modified, but the thrill is not. In a bobsled driven by a world-class pilot, you whizz down the 1270m-long run, likely screaming as you negotiate the run’s 14 curves at speeds of up to 100 km/h. You’ll feel the full G-force thrill of banking and bending through a blur of Alpine countryside.

Early July is also the ideal time to hit the many hiking trails in the region; these are brightened by Alpine rose, which blooms from mid-June. — www.olympiaworld.at; www.knauseder-event.at
