I stare at the ceiling for hours. For the first hour after Quinn left, I half expected to see her walk back through that door, an apology on her face. I would’ve opened my arms to her and welcomed her back into my bed in a heartbeat.

I’ve never gotten it when people talk about throwing out I love you in the heat of the moment or how hard they fall when they have sex. I’ve never felt that. Not one time. Sex is a transaction: I make you feel good, you make me feel good, we get what we want. End of story.

Sex with Quinn was a revelation. Kissing her was an awakening. Her body trembling against mine was transformative. I have never felt like that, ever.

I’m not claiming it’s love or anything close to that.

But the longer I’ve had to think about it in this quiet room with no sleep, the more I know this: I would’ve rearranged my life, my time, my thoughts, my everything to feel that again, and she trampled on me like I was a fucking weed in the garden she’d decided to dig up.

I guess I can thank her for running out of here like a scared animal.

I almost got in too deep. Almost.

I almost lost sight of the plan.

Never again.

I’ll have to rework it, but something tells me she’ll be back. Maybe not right away, maybe all bristle and bite when she does, but she’ll remember how I made her feel and want more.

And then I will crush her.

After tonight, the burn will feel all the sweeter.
