James sighed when he heard the door open. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been in the garden, but it felt good, and his wolf was calmer now that he’d left the house for a bit.

“Are you trying to hide?” Fyfe asked.

“Nah. I know you can find me easily. The house is big, but it’s not that big, especially with all the rooms that are off limits.”

“Only the private bedrooms.”

“I know.”

Fyfe flopped down on the bench next to James. He was always so graceful when he moved, and James wondered if it was him or if the vampirism had transformed him. He hadn’t noticed many changes in his human self since he’d been bitten and had become a werewolf, but it had only been a year. Would he still be this way in fifty or sixty years? Or would he become more like the wolf?

“You need to leave, James.”

James’ heart felt like it tripped. He knew he had to leave. He’d been planning to leave. But hearing it from Fyfe hurt, much more than it should have. They were friends, but that was it. Right? “I know.”

“I’ve already found another safe place. I wish I could keep you here and I want you to come back as soon as this mess is solved, but right now, you’ll be safer away from the coven. Alfred is getting antsy, and I expect him to start something. I’m not sure what yet, but I’d feel better if you weren’t here when it happens, just in case it involves the conclave or trying to take the leadership from me.”

James twisted on the bench so he could see Fyfe. “Is that a possibility? Is he going to try for the leadership?”

“Well, we both know I’d win in a fair fight. But Alfred is one of the old guard, and by that, I mean that he was a strong supporter of the old leader. He’s crafty and won’t stop for anything to get what he wants. I’m still not sure why he stayed instead of leaving when I became the leader, and honestly, I don’t care. I’m going to kick his ass if he tries anything, but I can’t risk you.”

Fyfe cared. That much was obvious, even to James. He wouldn’t have risked himself and his coven if he didn’t care about James and what happened to him.

And James didn’t want to go. “I can find a safe place, don’t worry.”

Fyfe frowned. “I already did. We have to leave before dawn, though.”

“You’ve already done so much for me, Fyfe. I don’t want you to get into more trouble.”

Fyfe waved. “I’ll be the judge of what’s trouble, okay? I want to do this, and I will. I have a safe place, and I’m still trying to find a wolf who will teach you control.”

“I don’t know what to say.” James swallowed. He didn’t want to ask this, but it might be the last time he was alone with Fyfe. Hell, it might be the last time he saw Fyfe, period.
