Their four guests had taken a liking to the piano room, and after becoming accustomed to Vera’s playing, Camilla could barely stand what she was hearing. It was atrocious, unpleasant at the kindest.

But they were having fun, laughter heard past the horror of the keys.

Looking for an out, she’d found her sisters in the living room, Vera practicing her sketching—horribly—and Maya staring into the fire.

“Anyone care for a walk?” She knew Maya was still annoyed with her, and she truly did feel badly for it.

There was no answer but the silent rise and move to the front door.

They traveled past their neighborhood, through the local park, and into a different pathway of the forest, Camilla breaching conversation about two minutes into the walk that had nothing to do with apologizing to Maya. That was how they worked. They fought, then got over it.

And she had nothing to apologize for. She was right, and eventually, hopefully not too late, Maya would realize it.

They spoke about nothing—the neighbors or local going-ons—and about everything—their house guests and the growing problems within the magical world. Vera and Maya told Camilla about the new missing banshee, adding that to the list of things to worry about.

But knowing she only had so long on this walk, Camilla pushed the conversation back to the nothings of town. A distraction.

They were not long into the woods when Camilla felt the familiar push back from nothing. Another shield.

They were surrounded. Again.

And the feeling of difference and similarity told her it was The Eight.

This time unmasked.

And Colette was not among them. Had she ever been, or were there so many members her presence wasn’t needed? Surely there were, but Camilla didn’t want to think about how much that could be. Or what it could mean.

There was no point in fighting back immediately. A large part of her, basically all of her, knew The Eight still hadn’t gotten what they wanted from them, so they’d be fine.

Plus, the vague memories she had as their captive was more her bumping into a shield and falling than actually getting hurt. Though she was still unclear on other events.

Even so, the moment one witch dropped the shield, another paralyzed them to their spots. Total paralysis could wipe out any calm thoughts. Instantly.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t the best idea to not fight back, even if they’d been in a shield and wouldn’t have been able to actually do much.

One of the members stepped up, walking straight to Maya and taking a piece of her hair between two fingers. Her eyes moved to meet Maya’s as she threw the piece of hair back. “Your boyfriend killed my sex toy.”

Not her boyfriend.

Maya smirked, likely more proud of Hunter in that moment than she ever had been. Camilla was, if only for causing that bitch some misery.

He would be getting rewarded tonight for no other purpose than the fact that this bitch wouldn’t be. Camilla was sure of that.

Maya’s smirk held as she looked the halfie in the eyes.
