On the third day of her New York visit, Teagan met her mother in their fashion line’s design studio.

“Well, it’s about time you came home,” her mother said, not attempting to sugar-coat her displeasure.

Was New York home? Teagan wasn’t sure anymore. More and more and despite the mess she’d made, she envisioned her future in Charleston. It’s where her birth mother had grown up and the city was steeped in her family’s history.

And then there was Chase. She’d never known anyone like him. After only two days in New York, she missed him terribly. He’d surprised her as a lover, demonstrating that fierce passion simmered beneath his flinty demeanor. Given how he’d resisted her in the beginning and made it clear that he wasn’t keen on being attracted to her, once he’d decided to surrender to the incandescent chemistry between them, he’d given her everything.

Her skin tingled as she recalled his impassioned groans and delighted sighs as his powerful body had driven her to the stars. Each time he’d been so tuned into her every need. His consideration had only increased her desire and made her appreciate him all the more.

Never before Chase had Teagan been with a man who cherished her. Feeling safe had allowed her to be vulnerable with him and their deep intimacy transformed her.

“We need to talk about the designs for our Spring line,” her mother said, referring to the clothing company they’d started the year Teagan turned thirteen.

While the line bore Teagan’s name and the designs were shaped by her creativity, Anna Burns was the driving force behind the company—especially in the early years when Teagan just wanted to be photographed and admired wearing pretty clothes.

“Of course,” Teagan agreed. “And while we’re discussing it, I wanted to let you know that I plan on opening a boutique in Charleston.”

Her mother made a derisive sound. “Why?”

“My roots are in Charleston and I intend to establish myself there.” The fervent declaration surprised her until Teagan realized that she spoke with her whole heart.

“Your mother left Charleston,” Anna reminded her. “She came to New York to establish herself here. Why would you want to go backwards?”

Teagan didn’t consider embracing her Charleston roots to be a step backwards. “I have family there.”

“I thought we were your family.”

“You are.” Uttering those two words didn’t reverse the way Teagan had been feeling since learning her father had no intention of turning the family business over to a girl he’d adopted. “But they are, too. And I want to get to know them better.”

Anna Burns sniffed. “You have a life here. Businesses. Responsibilities. Friends. Why are you wasting your time in Charleston?”

“I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time.” But she hadn’t exactly been successful thus far. Still, running back to Manhattan with her tail between her legs wasn’t the answer either. She’d learn from her failures and avoid making the same mistakes.

In her heart of hearts she knew that she had gone down to Charleston in the hope of winning everyone to her side.
