Chapter Fourteen
Sweet kisses down her spine woke Zhane up the next morning. She turned over to face the man she had lain with the night before.
“Good morning handsome,” Zhane smiled.
“Good morning sweetie. How’d you sleep?”
“Sleep?” Zhane chuckled. “You wouldn’t let me sleep with all the snoring you did.”
“Whatever man, I don’t even snore,” Nasir denied Zhane’s accusations.
“If you say so Nasir,” Zhane laughed. “Nasir?” Zhane said becoming serious.
“Yeah Sweetie?” Nasir answered laying his head in her lap.
“You know when you said your auntie wanted to save me because I reminded her of you mom?” She spoke softly rubbing his back.
“Yeah,” Nasir said shortly.
“Why’d you say that?”
“Because…” Nasir paused taking a deep breath. “My moms used to let a man mistreat her the same way…but you different from her.”
“How so?”
“You left.”
“Your mom didn’t?”
“Nope.”
“That’s why you stay away from her?”
“Nah, I stay away from her because she’s dead and I ain’t got no other choice,” Nasir spoke, keeping his head turned away from Zhane. He didn’t want her to see all the hurt in his eyes. He liked Zhane, but he didn’t trust her enough to let her that far into his life.
“Wow, he killed her?”
“Yup. She allowed him to kill her. She allowed him to break her spirit and keep her beneath him,” Nasir said, trying not to give up the fact that he was now in tears. It was too late, Zhane had already grabbed him up to console him, as his mind flashed back to the horrific night he watched his mother die in his arms, fifteen years ago.
“I’m sorry for bringing that up Nasir,” Zhane spoke, as she held his head close to her chest. She listened to Nasir cry for what felt like a long time. Flashbacks of the night she was subjected to Kareem’s abuse that led to her being in the hospital, flooded her mind.
I could have easily been dead too, she thought to herself.
“It’s cool. You needed to know. That situation you were in could have ended a lot differently, but you were strong. My mom wasn’t.” The thought of his mother angered him.
Nasir had been angry with his mom for so long, for being so weak. For putting a man before him and even her own life. He was angry at her for allowing his young eyes to experience so much. He was angry with his mom for leaving him to cry himself to sleep on many nights. When his stepdad would come home from the block sloppy drunk, he would beat his mother until she was unconscious or to the point she couldn’t see because her eyes were swollen shut. He was angry with her for waking him up at four in the morning on school nights, because she needed to go to the police station to press charges on her abusive, drunk husband, only to march him back up there the next day to drop them.
“I love you,” Nasir said, catching Zhane off guard. “You don’t have to say it back. I just wanted you to know.
