Pheromones (derived from the Greek words meaning “to bear” and “hormone”) are chemical combinations producing scents that animals give off to other animals of the same species. The pheromones provide information and produce behavioral responses. They are transmitted by glands and received by the bees’ antennae and other body parts. Honey bees utilize a number of pheromones, which are instrumental in all aspects of colony life; in fact, honey bees have one of the most complex pheromonal communication systems found in nature.
