EMILIANO: No, it’s fine. I don’t . . . I’m not staying. I’ve seen many in my lifetime.

MARINA: Stay.

PAQUITA: Stay. I’ll get your glasses. I’ll get them for you. (Exits)

(There’s an awkward silence between father and daughter.)

EMILIANO: Have you been up all this time?

MARINA: Yes.

EMILIANO: Marina, you can’t be doing drugs.

MARINA: I know. But it was just one time. I promise . . .

(Karim enters. He wears shorts and a towel around his neck. He’s been swimming.)

KARIM: The water is warm. You should swim. I’m going in to get a drink. (To Marina) You want something?

MARINA: No.

KARIM (To Emiliano): And you? (Exits)

MARINA (After a pause): Tell me about you and Karim? Paquita told me . . .

EMILIANO: I don’t want to talk about it.

MARINA: I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you and him . . .

EMILIANO: Well, now you know.

MARINA: If I had known, Papá . . .

EMILIANO: It’s better if we don’t talk about it.

(Silence. He looks into the distance full of pain and remorse.)
