Charlotte smiled as she listened to Sawyer and Ellis kid around as they worked on the tiger painting Sawyer wanted to tackle next. She’d offered to cook for them, glad to be able to give Ellis a respite from the craziness of the day. However, she didn’t think Ellis looked exactly uncomfortable in the middle of all those beautiful women.

The day had started off horribly, yet Ellis had taken the time to ease her worry. But the time she’d taken with Sawyer made her wish that Ellis meant what she said about giving her a place. If she worked for Ellis, then Sawyer would have a place too, and Sawyer would also have someone who cared about her as well. Ellis didn’t seem to be faking that.

Ellis was filling the gap that should’ve belonged to Kyle, and Charlotte was surprised how much that mattered to her. Loving children that much was an attractive trait, and seeing that compassionate side of Ellis made her understand why she never had trouble getting someone into her bed. That wasn’t something she’d waste time worrying about, considering the list of women Ellis had been connected to in the tabloids. Hell, Birdie Jones had looked ready to devour her after that greeting.

“I’m losing my mind if that’s what I’m thinking about,” she said softly as she stirred the beef stew she was making because Amis had told her it was Ellis’s second favorite thing.

But if she was totally honest with herself, it’d be okay to admit that she’d had a problem with the way the models had touched Ellis. It seemed way beyond friendship and almost intimate, and that was something she was starting to wonder about as well. Ellis had a way of looking at her that made her feel both naked but beautiful, and it was intoxicating.

Unlike anyone she’d ever known, Ellis had reached deep inside and brought her back to life. That sensation of being in the warmth of Ellis’s total attention most probably wouldn’t last, and when it ended, the cold sensation of loneliness would replace it.

So she’d enjoy this while it lasted. The memories she’d come away with would hopefully be enough to get her through the nights.

Her ringing phone stopped her descent into that rabbit hole and veered her in another direction when she saw it was Kyle. “Hello.”

“When are you coming home?”

“Why are you doing this?” In the numerous conversations they’d had, she’d gotten angry but had never bothered to ask that question.

“I’ve heard about this bitch so Sawyer’s not safe, and she’s a bad influence. You need to bring her back where her family is.”

His logic would’ve made sense if he’d given a damn about Sawyer before this, but his insistence still gave her no clue as to his motive. “With you? Is that what you mean?”

“You can insult me all you want, but I’m not backing down.”

“I come home, then what?” She turned and stared out the window at the folks sitting around the pool enjoying dinner.
