Rejoice with those who rejoice.

ROMANS 12:15

Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, followed the Lord’s ways. They were old and didn’t have any children. This made them very sad. When have you felt sad about something you couldn’t have?

Zechariah was a priest. One day it was his turn to serve in the Temple. While he was there, an angel named Gabriel visited him. How would you feel if an angel suddenly appeared to you? Zechariah was surprised and afraid.

But Gabriel said to him, “Don’t be afraid. God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will soon have a son, and you are to name him John. He will bring you much delight. Many people will rejoice because of him. He will be great in the Lord’s eyes.” Do you think Elizabeth became pregnant like the angel said she would? She sure did!

Elizabeth gave credit to God, saying, “God has done this for me.”

Elizabeth had a cousin whose name was Mary. She was engaged to a righteous man named Joseph, and they would soon be married. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary six months after he appeared to Elizabeth’s husband. He said, “Greetings! The Lord has blessed you! The Lord is with you.”
