Chapter 15

He knew Kara was close by. Afraid. In pain. The bear remained in control, Owen just a passenger in his own head, but they were too weak. He lay in a hospital bed, tied down, as doctors and nurses worked over him. Everything after the warehouse was a fog, patchy memories and snatches of light and conversation. Him telling Lacey what to say to Kaiser and the others. Then getting tossed into a vehicle and driving at break-neck speed. Everything else faded away.

Until Kara's mood changed and fear overwhelmed her. Fear and grief and regret. It was too much for the bear. He ripped at the restraints and pulled free, bending the bars of the bed, and lurched upright even as his body objected to the effort. Blood still dripped from at least three different places on his body, splattering on the floor like running water, and the pain of broken ribs and torn flesh almost dropped him right there next to the bed.

But she was more important. Reaching Kara was more important than the pain in his chest and the weakness of his knees. Owen focused on the door, struck by deja vu and almost back at the warehouse as his mind played tricks again. One foot in front of the other.

He made it down the hall, despite the doctors and nurses and guards trying to restrain him, and found Kara's room. Kaiser stood between him and his mate. The alpha bristled and tried to block Owen from reaching her, and the bear almost broke free entirely. Owen growled, consumed by one thought: Kara.

She lay in a hospital bed, the alpha's mate next to her, and she looked awful. Pale and wan, covered in bandages spotted with blood, her lips cracked and dry. And she looked afraid. Pained. Owen snarled and tried to shove past Kaiser, though the alpha bumped chests and knocked him back a step. The bear roared and clawed at him. They had to reach Kara. The machines attached to her started to scream in alarm and his panic elevated. He had to save her.

Kaiser lifted him up and lumbered a few feet away from the bed and the women before he put Owen back on his feet, blocking every effort Owen made to reach Kara. The alpha caught his shoulders and shoved Owen up against the wall, teeth bared. "Get your fucking mind right, bear. You're scaring her."

The bear didn't believe him. Kara and Josie remained on the far side of the room, Kara still in bed though she looked dazed and uncertain. Owen growled. Kaiser's grip tightened on his shoulders, both bright spikes of pain as his bones ground together. The alpha came dangerously close to biting him. "If you calm the fuck down, I will have them bring a bed in here for you, and you can sleep in the same room. But you have to get yourself under control, man."

Owen breathed through his nose, staring past Kaiser's shoulder at where Kara lay.
