Chapter Nine

Gideon

"Gideon, I…" Jack's eyes were wide. The fear in his voice and body was the only thing holding Gideon back. He wanted to protect Jack. And that also meant protecting Jack from himself when his own territorial urges were becoming too intense.

Gideon forced an angry breath through his lungs, held it there and then exhaled. "What am I interrupting?" he asked. It took effort to relax his stance and to keep from sprinting over to reach Jack's side. To say he wasn't a fan of how close John stood to his mate would have been an understatement. But, he wasn't about to scare Jack with his jealousy. John had tried to kiss him, but Jack had pushed him away.

There was no place for fear in their relationship. When he reached Jack's side, he pulled him smoothly towards his body with a hand around his waist.

"None of your business—" John began.

"Nothing, really. John was just telling me about a conversation he had had with my parents that has no bearing on what is going on here." Jack turned so that he was speaking to John directly. "I don't want their help. And I don't want your help. We'll figure out how to make it work, or we will lose the land, and it will go to the state."

John looked as if Jack had just told him he was planning on becoming a clown in a traveling circus. "Jack, you don't know what you're—"

Before Gideon could cut him off, Jack was already there. "No, you don't know what you're doing here. You came to Noel expecting to find the same Jack you broke up with. I'm different, stronger. This place does that to me. A good partner does that to me. Go home, John. I'm going to be busy in the weeks to come and won't have the energy to protect you."

John's expression reminded Gideon of a slug shriveling in the sun. "Do you need a ride to the bus station?" Gideon asked with mock sweetness.

John turned, mumbled a string of curses that Gideon was glad Jack couldn't hear and stomped away.

"I didn't ask him to kiss me," Jack said once they were alone.

Gideon wiped Jack's mouth with the bottom of his shirt like he was wiping off a dirt smudge. "I know, Jackie."

"You aren't mad?"

"At you? Never."

Gideon felt guilty at the way Jack slumped against him with relief. "Did you get everyone moved in?"

"Yes. And Roscoe called everyone together for a meeting inside. I thought you wouldn't want to miss it," Gideon told Jack.

Inside Maggie's, the pack had formed a half circle around Roscoe who stood in front of the unlit fireplace. Gaia sat on the hearth beside him, and Angus was on his other side.

When Gideon and Jack stepped inside, every head turned their direction. Gideon gave Jack's hand a tight squeeze. He knew how the other man must be feeling and wished he could tell him, in a way that he would believe, that no one blamed him for this mess.
