Mac was supposed to be listening to the debrief.

They were back at PITA headquarters, camped out in the corner of the office by his and Al’s desks. It was late at night, so most of the staff had gone home. Just a few night staff were on, working away as their team gathered around to see what Cent’s worm had managed to uncover. Placidity leaned against the desk opposite, arms crossed over his chest, and Al leaned back in her chair, feet up on her desk. She’d switched out her heels for a pair of combat boots, and he couldn’t stop looking at her legs. It wasn’t just the legs though, even though they were very nice legs. It was her. She was gorgeous.

“Well, the worm took a little time to get into place…” Cent began, his voice quickly fading away as Mac’s attention was hijacked by other things.

Namely, that kiss.

The one on the couch behind the potted plant. Oh, he’d started it with all good intentions. A quick smooch to fool Willy Pick into thinking they were only back there for some quality alone time, with each other rather than his office, but to say the situation had gotten away from him was like calling a thunderstorm a “little bit wet.” Well, something had been wet, but the only thunder had been in his heart as he’d pulled her close and kissed her for the first time.

“But it looks like we managed to get all the information we needed on Pick’s enterprise.”

And it had been heaven. Her lips under his, not pliant but actively kissing him back. The feel of warm silk and womanly curves under his hands…

“It’s bigger than we thought--”

Oh, moon’s teeth, it certainly was.

“The mothmen are running the east side of town, and he’s got pixies and other supernaturals for other areas. Their main product seems to be something called Fairy Snow.”

“What the brandysnap is that when it’s at home?” Placidity demanded.

“No idea, but it seems to be big business. And highly illegal. Looks like there’s another player involved as well. Someone who’s keeping himself in the shadows… and I have no idea how they’re getting this ‘snow’ into the city.”

Cent was still talking and Mac really wanted him not to be. His bear also wanted Cent to stop waffling and for Mac to figure out how to get Al into his arms again, where their mate should be.

And she was their mate. No way would she have kissed him with such all-consuming fire and passion, their mouths mating like a couple of wererabbits, if she wasn’t. It had been the sort of kiss that would quickly have escalated. In fact, if Willy Pick hadn’t interrupted when he had, Mac would’ve—

“Penny for them?” Placidity demanded, his gruff voice somewhere in the vicinity of Mac’s ear.

“What?!” He yelped and grabbed a couple of the files in lieu of a cushion to conceal the direction his thoughts had been heading. The files squeaked in indignation and flapped the edges of their papers as they tried to wriggle free.
