Chapter Five

Thoughts of Anthony whirled in her mind all day. She didn’t remember the last time she’d smiled so much or ached in all the right places. The male was sensual, compassionate, and pure alpha male. Everything she loved and wanted in a mate.

Loved.

Yeah, she was falling for him. Even after spending just one night with him, she knew it wouldn’t be long before she caved. Hell, she’d known after the first time they made love. The next few times were her undoing. She would open up to him and accept the man and the bear as hers.

She was about to be a mated female. There was no holding back her feelings after the night she’d had.

Goodbye single life.

The bell on the door dinged, and Connie cringed. It never failed that a customer would come in ten minutes before closing. Well, whoever it was would have to wait until the next day to get their photos back. Unless they were picking up an order. Connie had already shut down the machine. Sure, it could be restarted, but she had a hot date. Literally.

“How can I help you?” She glanced up at the customer and froze. Fury rose up, and she fisted her hands as she watched the man.

His bushy eyebrows were drawn together and looked like a large, black, fuzzy worm across his forehead. Opening her senses, she called her to her magick and focused on his body language as well as his emotions, which flowed around him like angry bees. The man had issues, and she guessed it had nothing to do with her. His aura was darker than it had been the other day in the forest. Odd.

“I was passing by and thought I’d stop by and say hi.”

Bullshit. He was lying. His lack of eye contact, as well as her intuition told her that. Her first guess was that he’d followed her.

She squared her shoulders and lifted her chin. Deciding to play dumb and act like she didn’t recognize him, she narrowed her eyes slightly, studying him as if seeing him for the first time. “Have we met?”

He slammed his hands on the counter, making her jump. “Two days ago up the mountain.

I believe you threatened me with my own shotgun.”

Yeah, she remembered. She’d tried to keep the human from getting hurt. She couldn’t kill him, but she could make him wish he were dead. Then there was Anthony. She closed her eyes at the thought. No, she needed to deal with the human herself.

“Look, you were acting like an ass, and I did what I had to in order to protect you and myself.”

He threw his head back and laughed. “The only reason I didn’t teach you a lesson was because of that huge-ass bear.” He narrowed his eyes. “How did you escape the beast?”

She grinned while spreading her fingers to allow building power to spread to her fingertips. “Just call me the bear whisperer.”

His eyes narrowed as he studied her. A knowing brushed against her subconscious.
