Noah

Noah hated leaving April alone but he needed to get with the crew. He needed to find out what had been going on since he had been out of the loop. Everyone was assembled at a different spot, hidden deep in the woods. Hopefully, the spy didn’t know about this place yet.

Everyone was on edge.

“Mack Gentry is missing,” Jesse said.”

“What do you mean, missing?” Noah asked, on high alert.

“According to his daughter, he went out for a walk. He wasn’t even planning on shifting. He never came back home,” Billy said.

Noah sat quiet. He would like to think that Mack, in his old age, got lost in the woods. That wasn’t likely, though. If there was anyone who knew the woods better than Noah, it would be Mack – even if he forgot other things once in a while.

“How long?” Noah asked.

“Two days,” Jesse said. “We all went out looking for him last night and this morning. There is no sign of him anywhere.”

Daniel slammed his hand down on the table and yelled, “Those damned hunters have him.”

Noah figured that Daniel was probably right but didn’t want to encourage the rage.

“Was there any sign of a struggle or any blood?” Noah asked.

“None in any of the areas where we looked for him,” Billy said. “His daughter said that he was a creature of habit and would walk the same areas every day.”

“If he wasn’t going to shift, then why would the hunters be interested in him?”

“There is no telling. Maybe the spy told the hunters who he was,” Billy said.

“I think that we need to take out the hunters,” Daniel said. “They know way too much about us. They’re going to pick us off one by one and kill us.”

“Do you really think that killing off all the hunters in the area would do any good?” Jesse asked. “The only think that would happen would be that every single hunter in the entire world would descend upon the area. Then, shifters and innocent humans would be hurt in a huge war.”

“We can’t let them keep killing us,” Bernie said. “My mother and sisters are terrified of even leaving the house because no one knows who is going to be targeted next. My father is grouchy all the time because he can’t go out into the woods, shift, and go for a run.”

“I understand the frustration,” Noah said. “But attacking the hunters is not the answer. We have to figure out another way.”

“What way?” Daniel said, angrily. “It’s either us or them.”

“Anyone who is afraid of the hunters could go through the portal,” Jesse suggested.

“Why should we have to give up our lives here just because of someone else’s hatred?” Bernie asked. “My father has a good law practice. My mother is a nurse. They have a nice house and a nice life that they have worked hard for their entire life. It’s not fair that they should have to give all of that up and start all over in a whole new world just because they might be hunted by some evil bastards.
