Chapter Fourteen

VALENTINA

Swallowing hard, I study Bear’s broad shoulders. He opened the door but didn’t step in. From the way his shoulders tighten, I know exactly what he sees. A bed. As in one singular bed. His shock is so obvious it almost makes me laugh.

Almost, because another part of me is afraid of rejection. He has me with him all the time, and even though he let me kiss him, and kissed me back, he doesn’t make another move. I can’t stop thinking that he might feel forced by me. Maybe he thinks he should give in because my father hired him?

I shake my head and touch a hand to his back. “Everything alright?”

He nods, then steps inside. “Yes, of course. I didn’t hear the man out. He may have mentioned the fact there’s only one bed...”

I make my way into the room, hugging myself closer, fighting the cold breeze. The place is not exactly pretty, but it’s clean. That’s the best I can expect of a run-down motel in a small town. Cream wallpaper peels from the corners, and the one bed, though large, is not long and I’m pretty sure Bear’s feet would hang out of it. The dark blue duvet is thin, but not stained. I reach out for the towels and my brows rise in surprise. They’re quite soft.

“It’s just for one night,” I tell Bear without looking at him. “We’ll be off tomorrow, anyway.”

He grunts in response, and I guess that’s an affirmative. Tension making my shoulders hurt, I race into the bathroom and close the door behind me. I don’t lock it, part of me hoping Bear would join me. Of course, he doesn’t, and once I’m clean, warm, and dressed in flannel pajamas, I make my way back into the room.

Bear paces by the closed door. The space is too small for his long strides and he can only take two steps before he turns about himself and walks back. I press my lips together, keeping a peal of laughter behind my teeth. Whatever the sound I make, Bear lifts his head. He has quite the hearing.

He arches an eyebrow. “What are you laughing about?”

I shrug. “I didn’t laugh.”

His eyes narrow. “You were about to.” And then he moves his gaze down my body, and my skin prickles with his attention. The pajamas are long-sleeved, the pants long enough I have to fold the hem, and yet Bear makes me feel... powerful.

I swallow hard and make my way to the bed. Even if I have no experience, the desire I feel for this man is obvious. It boils in my stomach, making me nauseous with how much I want him. And tonight, it’s only the two of us. And one bed. This is my chance to have him.

Bear clears his throat. Violently. It’s a rough sound that makes me jerk in surprise. “Are you hungry?” he roars out, not looking at me.

I’m hungry for him, but I don’t say that. Instead, I sit on the bed and tap the mattress next to me.
