It’s all very depressing. Monty tries desperately to think of an idea that will cheer everyone up, but he can’t.

‘We mustn’t let this get us down,’ he says at last. ‘You never know what’s around the corner.’ He glances up at the dull sky. ‘It’s like … the sun’s behind a cloud now, but it’ll come out again soon, and then everything will look different.’

It sounds weak, even to him. But he’s right. In more ways than one.

‘Ha!’ Marigold snorts. ‘Is that what you mean about never knowing what’s around the corner, Monty?’ She points at Clink, who’s slipped something blue from under his jersey and is showing it to Trader Bold.

‘What is it?’ Bunchy asks, turning to look.

‘The book I thought I’d lost,’ hisses Marigold. ‘The one Jolly gave me to keep a note of things we need. Clink must have stolen it! And now he’s actually trying to make Bold take it in return for a ride! That pirate really is the greediest, meanest, most selfish, most dishonest …’
