GIFT OF THE MORNING

What is the first thing we all do when we wake up in the morning? Stretch, make coffee, have a shower? Before that. What is the very first thing we do before we even get out of bed?

As soon as our awareness comes online in the morning, most of us put our minds back on our shoulders and we slip back into the suit of our life, the one we left by the side of the bed the night before. This happens quite automatically, and the next thing we know, we are the same person we were the day before.

Every single morning we wake up from the realm of the unconscious to enter the realm of conscious awareness. The day is brand-new and fresh with endless possibilities. Mystics and spiritual teachers through the ages have talked of how sacred and Divine the first few instants of the day are. In Hinduism, the time of day between 3:30 and 5:30 is called Brahma muhurta, which translates to “the time of God.” In the yoga tradition, meditating right before dawn is said to bring deeper states of meditation, as the mind is effectively still from the night’s sleep. Swami Satchidananda, in the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, qualifies Brahma muhurta as “a very sacred time to mediate.”

Just as the sun rises, our awareness rises. Just as the light begins to animate all living things, our attention is bestowed on our body and mind, on our existence. Every single morning we awake from our rest to a day that has never existed before. A day with the latent possibility of anything and everything, like a blank canvas waiting to be painted. Every morning we have the opportunity to create a very different kind of day for ourselves; we have the chance to fill the cup of our mind and body with any thoughts, intentions, and feelings we choose.

We have this gift every single day . . . and we are also creatures of habit!

So, quite automatically, thoughts, intentions, to-do lists, and our mental and emotional states from the day before and our personality traits and roles relevant to what is currently going on in our lives come flowing in and fill up all that roomy space with mostly the same old stuff that was there before. We quickly establish the right things to do that day to support all the thoughts and goals.

Humans are said to have on average 65,000 thoughts a day. We know that our thoughts create our reality, so you’d think that with that many thoughts, we would have a good variety of new ideas and experiences every day. The bummer is that 90 percent of our daily thoughts are recycled from the day before. And at the crack of dawn, they all come pouring in, coloring the blank slate of our mind. If we are not aware of this, if we don’t catch ourselves before it all happens, we pick up exactly where we left off the day before and not much changes from day to day.
