Early the next morning the rain ceased, even as the weather turned distinctly cold. Winter hovered just around the corner. We headed to Icegem’s office, slipping into the building after one of the administrative workers. As soon as we reached his floor I knew something was wrong.
I put my arm out and stopped Quinn. I took a deep breath. Sulfur and musk. Fucking hellafuck. Not again. My fangs shot through my gum line, my dragon urging me to give it free rein.
Fat chance.
“Stay back.” I ran down the hallway, Quinn on my heels. The stubborn wizard couldn’t take commands worth a damn. We skidded to a halt in front of Icegem’s office. The door stood ajar. Otherwise things were quiet. Eerily so. I waved Quinn away from the doorway. No more hexes coming his way. Not on my watch.
Though Quinn’s expression turned mutinous, he—for once—did as I asked. His hands began to glow as he drew power from me.
I threw open the door, expecting the worst. While no magical traps jumped out at me, I couldn’t help noticing Icegem slumped in his chair, a sizable dagger lodged in his chest.
Dammit. I scanned the room for traps. None that I could see. Parchment and tomes were scattered everywhere, his filing cabinet overturned. Apparently, his cabinet wasn’t hexed like mine.
Entering, I approached Icegem and felt for a pulse. None. But he was still warm.
“Oh, damn. This is so not good.” Quinn scrubbed a hand through his hair. “I don’t suppose we can . . .”
I groaned, pulling out my father’s invocation stone. I would be on his shit list for the next millennia at this rate.
Within a half hour, Leotoris and his partner Win grilled us in the history department’s conference room.
Leotoris paced the small room, while Quinn and I sat at the table. He did not look happy to see us.
“So, tell me again, how you managed to find not one, not two, but three murdered professors.”
“We should go by the book, Leo,” the other agent said. “Separate them and see how well their stories hold up then.”
Leotoris shot the other agent a quelling look. “Win, they’re wizard and familiar. My understanding is they can read each other’s thoughts. At least, according to High Councilor Starfig. Separating them would be pointless.”
My father didn’t hand out information like candy. He wanted Leotoris to know. Which meant he didn’t want us separated. I wasn’t surprised. He probably hoped Quinn would keep me in check.
His partner didn’t look happy about this revelation. Naturally, to be a dick, I grinned at him. I got tired of being treated like a criminal. We were the good guys here. As weird as that felt, it was true.
“Why did you come here so early? Did you have a meeting with Professor Icegem?”
I wasn’t sure how much to tell them. I didn’t exactly have a reason to keep things from the EBI, yet I needed to be cautious. They had a high solve rate to maintain. I couldn’t be sure they wouldn’t look our direction.
