The Bathroom

We talked earlier about glass cleaner and how much we loved the homemade version we tried. This homemade glass cleaner is the same recipe as the all-purpose cleaner we use in the kitchen.

GLASS CLEANER

1 part vinegar

1 part water

Essential oil (optional)

The really gross stuff in our homes requires the most dangerous chemicals to clean. Or so we thought. The toilets and drains—yuck! These cleaners are among the most hazardous in any home. When Chrissy looked up her toilet cleaner on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Household Products Database (http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/index.htm), what she found shocked her. They recommended she wear long rubber gloves and eye protection! The product was corrosive to the eyes and skin and required emergency medical attention if it came in contact with any body part. We felt as though we needed full body armor just to clean our bathrooms. This made the run-of-the-mill bathroom germs seem pretty benign!

A safer, less expensive way to clean drains and toilets is a simple solution of vinegar and baking soda. We sprinkle one-half cup baking soda in our drain or toilet bowl, add one-half cup of vinegar, and let it sit for a half hour (or overnight, in the toilet). In drains, we then pour a full cup of hot water down to rinse; in the toilet bowl, we scrub with the toilet brush and flush.
