TAKE UP YOUR CROSS
The first step for me was releasing every person I had withheld forgiveness from. We will cover this process in-depth in a later chapter. The second step, confession, was a little more difficult for me.
I felt the Spirit leading me, and I confessed what had almost happened with Addison to my husband when he returned home that day. At first I protested, “But it didn’t happen, so why does John have to hear about this?”
Our hearts are hotbeds for good or bad seed.
I believe the reason this was necessary was threefold. First, the kingdom does not operate on merely natural principles. Remember, Jesus told the Pharisees that whoever looks at a woman with lust had committed adultery with her in his heart. Heart issues are of utmost importance in the kingdom. Our hearts are hotbeds for good or bad seed. It hadn’t happened in the physical realm in my case, but it had occurred in my heart. The shame and horror of it had already played themselves out in living color.
And though I was forgiven when I confessed my sin to the Father in the name of Jesus, look what the book of James tells us: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” (James 5:16 NIV).
By humbling myself through confessing my sin and praying with my husband, I positioned myself for a healing in this area. I had already been forgiven when I repented and confessed my sin to God, but healing flowed into the dark recesses of my heart when I brought my sin into the open. Confession sheds light on areas of sin and shame, and in this atmosphere of light prayer brings healing and restoration.
