Chapter Thirteen

“What time is it?” I heard Mallory ask from the living room couch. I turned around in the kitchen to look at her. She was sitting up and had pulled her blanket around her shoulders. Her hair was tussled, and she looked groggy.

“9:00 am,” I replied, sipping on the fresh coffee I had just poured. “I made coffee. You look like you could use it.”

“What happened last night?” Mallory asked, rubbing her face with her hands.

“You don’t remember anything?”

“Bits and pieces. It’s all kind of a blur,” she said.

“I better get you some coffee.” I poured another cup and brought it over to Mallory. I sat down on the recliner next to the couch and recapped the events of the night before, sparing no detail, except for the fact that I hadn’t been able to change into Wolf form.

“I fell asleep in Phillips lap?” Mallory’s face was completely white, and her eyes were wide.

“Yes, you did. You even rolled over onto your back so he could scratch your belly.” Mallory looked like she might be sick. “Don’t worry, he only scratched under your chin.”

“What would cause my Wolf to behave like that?” she asked in disbelief.

“I guess she has a little crush on our Vampire friend,” I teased. I was trying to take it easy on Mallory, but I couldn’t resist a little bit of chiding. Her Wolf was so unbelievably ridiculous last night. Like a sorority girl at her first party with alcohol.

“How is that even possible?” Mallory asked, horrified.

“Anything’s possible, Mal,” I said. “Maybe your Wolf senses your feelings?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Mallory said as she jumped off the couch, almost tripping over the large blanket she was wrapped in. She stumbled but didn’t fall.

“You’ll be alright here today?” I asked.

“Where are you going?”

“To see Grandpa.”

“Jesus, you’re actually going?” she exclaimed. “I thought you meant you’d call him or something.”

“You have a phone number for him?” I asked. Mallory shook her head. “I didn’t think so. You know as well as I do that he is off the grid. And even if I sent Henry, or someone from the Higher Authority out there, he wouldn’t talk. Our best bet is me convincing him somehow to open up.” I sighed deeply and took another sip of coffee. The last thing I wanted to do was drive all day up to the wilderness of Canada to talk with my hermit grandfather.

“Are you going alone?” Mallory asked.

“No, Henry’s picking me up soon.”

“So, just the two of you?”

“Phillip’s asleep for the day, so unless you want to tag along?”

“That would be a hard no,” Mallory replied. She had never been a big fan of our grandfather.

My phone vibrated in the front pocket of my faded jeans. I whipped it out and saw a text from Henry that he was parked downstairs.

“Henry’s downstairs. Are you going to be okay?” I asked.

“I’m fine. Nothing a hot shower can’t fix. I have plenty to do in the bookstore today,” she said.

“Don’t be afraid to call Colt or Luke if you see anything suspicious,” I instructed.
