CHAPTER 4

The Croc Confrontation

SPLOOSH!

Harley splashed into a city sewer tunnel. The dim glow from the streetlight above the maintenance hole was all that lit her new surroundings.

She stood slowly, waiting for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Her nose, however, already worked just fine.

“Pee-yew!” she said, waving a hand in front of her face. “It’s stink-o-rama down here!”

“You get used to it.” A deep, menacing voice echoed in the tunnel.

Harley stiffened. “Who’s there?”

“I’ll give you three guesses,” came the same voice. It seemed to echo from a different location. “And the first two don’t count.”

“Croc?” Harley asked. “Is that you?”

“Good guess,” Killer Croc replied. His voice sounded right behind her.

Harley spun around. She could just make out the villain’s fierce form in the dim light.

“Fancy meeting you here!” she said. “Although, it’s not so strange, really. Since you live in the sewers.”

“You have something I want,” Killer Croc said. “The blueprint!”

The scaly beast charged out of the shadows. Harley ducked under his clawed hands and stepped to one side.

“About that,” Harley said. “Since you know so much about the sewers, how about you work for me on this bank job, huh? You could lead me right to that old subway tunnel.”

Killer Croc splashed to a stop. He roared with anger before charging again.

“After that, you could be a permanent part of my crew,” Harley suggested as she somersaulted over him. “I’m talking full benefits! Medical, dental… You could probably use dental, right?”

Croc bared his jagged teeth. He clawed at her, but she easily dodged the swipes.
