Chapter Twelve

Isobel wasn’t sure how long she stood there with an emotional-support vampire as she bawled, but when she was done, Liberty had not only showered but also packed an overnight bag for them both.

Someone had put out the van fire and the area had filled with too many men to count. They spoke with Rurik and the others, all while leaving Blaise there holding her. She wasn’t exactly one who sought out comfort from others. This was virgin territory for her, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about it all.

“Here you go,” said a man dressed as an EMT, although Isobel strongly suspected that wasn’t the case. That he was something far more. He held out a bag of blood toward Blaise.

“I’m fine,” said Blaise, stiffening as they continued to hold one another.

She glanced up and caught sight of one of his many ear piercings. It was just a glimpse, but for a second, she could have sworn one looked like the old charm bracelet she’d had. The one she’d lost in the fire ten years ago.

Auberi came around from behind a large truck that had taken the place of an SUV at some point during her breakdown.

Two other men walked behind him, carrying a body bag that they then loaded into the truck rather unceremoniously.

Auberi acted like it was no big deal dead bodies were being chucked into a truck right behind him. Like it was just like any other night of the week.

Maybe it was.

The EMT just stood there, stoic as he held out a bag of blood. He didn’t seem too bothered by time or any other task needing to be done.

The body bag guys walked away as other men came toward the truck, carrying large body bags. They set their bags on the ground at the back of the truck and hurried off to no doubt grab more.

Isobel fixated on the bags, unable to look away, as everyone else around continued to talk. She wasn’t sure what was being said. All she knew was that there were dead guys on the ground, right behind Auberi.

One of the body bags moved slightly all on its own.

Isobel pointed and stepped out of Blaise’s embrace, her attention remaining on the bag.

No one paid her any mind.

It moved again.

“Guys,” she whispered, but they just continued to quibble back and forth about Blaise needing to drink blood, but not wanting to. “Um, guys.”

“Yes?” questioned Auberi.

“The body in that bag is moving,” stated Isobel, still pointing.

With unhurried movements, Auberi glanced over his shoulder, looking at the bag in question.

The EMT looked as well.

Of course, it didn’t budge.

Auberi glanced back at Isobel, suspicion on his handsome face. Wisely, he said nothing to her, choosing instead to lecture Blaise about drinking bagged blood.

The EMT snorted as his gaze found her.

The body in the bag twitched again.

Wanting to rule out a nervous breakdown, Isobel inched her way closer to the bag. It moved again. Startled, she grabbed Auberi’s arm.

He stared down at her hand on his arm and licked his lips.
