That’s how I ended up in Adrian’s house again. Now that I wasn’t hungover and freaking out about Quin, I took a better look around. Sunlight spilled through a big window on one wall, casting beams over furniture that was beat to hell. Scattered odds and ends littered the floor—sneakers kicked off in a hurry, a crumpled magazine, a stack of books that had toppled over. The coffee table bore an ashtray full of stubbed out joints. Only Adrian’s acoustic guitar, leaned carefully in the corner, was polished and clean.

The kitchen, at least, was tidy. Adrian pulled a carton of eggs and a slab of bacon from the refrigerator while I stood to one side, probably looking as uncomfortable as I felt. He rummaged around in the cupboards for a couple of pans.

“This is breakfast food,” I said.

“Breakfast food is good anytime.” He set a loaf of bread on the counter, then pressed my back into the fridge, his hands drifting to my hips. “Unless you need me to find some other way to satiate your appetite.”

There he was. Cocky Adrian. Sexy Adrian. It was a relief to see him back to normal. At least, until he leaned in to kiss me, a little smirk pulling at the edges of his mouth. I wasn’t falling for it a second time.

“I’m not your plaything,” I snapped. I fisted my hand in the front of his shirt and held him out of kissing distance.

“No.” He leaned in again, pushing against my hold, and sucked my lower lip, capturing it gently between his teeth. Then he smiled. “I’m pretty sure I’m yours.”

“You took advantage of me being heartbroken!” I let go of his shirt and shoved him away with my hand.

“You used me for sex,” he corrected. He bustled around the kitchen again, as if declaring that I’d used him was no big deal.

“I didn’t use—”

“Didn’t you?” He looked up between cracking eggs into a bowl. “You needed to get off, you did, then you kicked me out of your apartment. Sounds like using to me.”

Well, when he put it that way… “Even if I did, which I didn’t because I clearly wasn’t thinking straight, wouldn’t that bother you?”

He smiled to himself as he whisked the eggs. “Nope. You can use me anytime you like.”

“I didn’t…” I groaned and sat down in a chair. “I didn’t realize courts were actual places,” I changed the subject. “I thought it was just a group of fae under the same lord.”

“It is. That was just the chamber where they meet for important things or hold social gatherings. They don’t all look like that, but,” he said, and waved a dish towel he was holding with a mocking flourish, “Lord Fenry has a flare for the dramatic.” He tossed the towel on the counter and heated a pan over the gas stove.

“Does my sister know about you?” I had the creeping sensation that I might be the only one out of the loop.

“No one knows. I told you that my heritage isn’t something I like to broadcast.
