CHAPTER 9

Sophia expected Baren to show some reaction when she confronted him about his real motive for coming to Pageantry, but a smile was not on that list. He really looked as if he was pleased with her, as if what she’d done made him proud.

“Don’t lie to me again,” she warned him. “I won’t give you another chance.”

“I never expected that you would, Ms. Page.” He regarded her for another moment before he said, “Your father was involved with a very dangerous group of subversives. My people arranged for me to take this position so I could find out why, and persuade him to end his alliance. He died before I could do that.”

“So, you’re a cop? A federal officer? Private detective?” As he kept shaking his head without answering she felt exasperated. “Why can’t you tell me? Is it classified or something?”

“Who I am and the people I work with are not important. I can help you find the truth.” He eyed the key Jerome had been wearing. “We should start by looking for your father’s safe. He wouldn’t have kept it secret unless it contained evidence of some kind, and there are only so many places in this house where he might have hidden it.”

“If it’s here at all. As custodian of my inheritance he could have easily bought other properties and put them under my name.” She felt frustrated. “When we find out what he was involved in, then what? You use it to stop these dangerous people, and put them away? Is this some kind of international investigation? Are you Interpol?”

“It’s something like that.” He leaned forward, his gaze intent. “What matters is discovering what your father was doing just before he died. I think he may have been trying to end his alliance.”

“Maybe that’s why he wanted me to come home.” A thought occurred to her. “That guy who followed me to the stables the other night, was he part of this group?”

Baren nodded. “These people are targeting you, probably so they can get to whatever your father had that they wanted. We have to find it before they do.”

“You came here under false pretenses, lied to me, and interrogated my staff without permission. You won’t tell me who you work for or show me any credentials.” As she hung the key around her neck, she tried to sound surer of herself than she felt. “Now you want me to rely on you, trust you, when you’ve done nothing to earn it.”

“Haven’t I?” He looked into her eyes, his own shadowed. “I think you must already have some faith in me, Ms. Page, or you wouldn’t have told me any of this. You would have fired me and had me escorted off your property.”

“I still could.” Surreptitiously she rubbed her damp palms against her skirt. “But all right, let’s say I do trust you, a little. You’ve obviously got some experience with this sort of thing, too. I don’t want to be kept in the dark any longer.
