As Gray sorted through her dresses, looking for just the right thing, a knock at her door made her groan and roll her eyes.

“I do not want to hear any more, Riddick. Go away.”

“It’s Nik.” She heard her leather pants-wearing partner in crime say from the other side of the door. She almost forgot how deep and husky his voice was. It sent a shockwave to her core, and she considered whether to let him in and jump him. She could use a pleasant distraction at the moment.

“No,” she muttered to herself. “Not the time to think with your vagina!”

She left her room and went to the door, opening it. He was there and not alone. There was a large half-orc with him. The man had green skin, and though his lower jaw jutted out a bit, his smile was cocky and alluring. He was a big guy, but not as big as a full orc. She figured he noticed her checking him out because he flexed his muscular arms and smirked at her.

“Who is this?” she asked Nik.

“A friend.”

“Oh, nice to meet you, friend.” Gray held out her hand.

The orc took it and placed a soft kiss there. “The name is Xavier.”

“Well, I didn’t think you would be into sharing,” Gray purred at Nik. “But he is a nice one.”

“I’m not here to have sex, especially not with Xavier,” Nik growled. “I don’t share.”

“Pity,” she sighed. “Please come in.”

She held her hand out toward her apartment, and they both entered.

“Is this the prince you were speaking about? I thought the lad was mortal and blonde.”

“This isn’t the prince.” Nik sat on the sofa. Xavier followed him, and Gray shut the door, took a deep breath, and turned to face them. She leaned against the door and crossed her arms. “This is another guard, a friend of mine, whom I’ve enlisted to help us.”

Gray glared at Nik. “Can’t keep your mouth shut?”

“We need backup, and Xavier is the strongest guard amongst us, and he’s not allowed into the ball, but he’s guarding the palace.”

“Oh, right, the ball?” She pushed herself off the door and sat in the armchair beside the sofa. “There’s a change of plans.”

“So we will not kidnap the princess at the ball?”

Gray glanced in Xavier’s direction. “Do you really trust this orc? Orcs are guards here in Egrah, and most bow down to the king for the land he gifted them—the Dwarf Mountains in return for their guard.”

“I am an orc from Ecenatia, firstly,” Xavier said, “and I have vowed an oath to the king of Yarah. I am also a half-orc, and you know how orcs feel about my kind.”

“Were you raised by a human or an orc?”

“Is this necessary?” Nik asked.

“Orc who was treated like a human because she loved one,” Xavier replied, not considering how invasive the question was.

Gray sighed. “There’s been a change of plans about the ball. I guess your guard will fit into the plan for our escape.”

“I love a good escape plan.
