ISABEL

I’m still pondering what else he’s lying to me about and why he was so interested in my beliefs when Grayson climbs out of bed.

He grabs his pants and pulls them on before holding up his cell. “I need to check on something. Be right back.”

When he walks into the living room, I yawn contentedly and roll on to my side so I can grab my own phone to check it.

I flinch when I see four missed calls from Gretchen and a bunch of texts, each one sounding increasingly concerned.

I check the time, then debate whether to call her back or not. I read the last text, and at the pull of guilt, dial her in the hopes I can reassure her I’ve not fallen off the edge of the world.

She picks up quickly, considering it’s almost midnight. “Where have you been? I’ve been trying to get hold of you all day.”

I scoot up in bed and tuck the sheets around my chest before I answer. “Sorry, I got tied up. Then I went to a party.”

I add hastily. “For work.”

She sounds tired when she lets out a breath. “Since when do you go to parties for work?”

I chew my lip and brace myself for the incoming onslaught. “Since I got a chance to write a story.”

“What kind of a story?”

I swallow and wish I had thought this through more before calling her. “Um, it’s kind of a work in progress. I can’t talk about the details.”

“Are you working with one of the senior reporters again?”

I glance at Grayson’s shirt lying on my floor. “Not exactly.”

She near growls down the phone. “Why are you being weird?”

“I’m not being weird.”

“Yeah, you are. Why’d you need to go to a party?”

Since I know what will come if I tell her about Grayson, I answer the second question first. “The party was for Carlton Stanford, and I was there gathering information.”

“Wow. That’s great. Who you go with? Another reporter?”

I check Grayson isn’t on his way back and blow out a breath. “No. I’m the only reporter working on this. My date was from, um out of town.”

She inhales sharply, then curses in my ear. “You did not take Grayson Cole to this thing?”

I keep my eyes on the door in case Grayson walks back through again. “Actually, he took me. I’m working with him while he’s here.”

“What the actual fuck, Izzy! Working with him? You are not serious?”

I scowl at the clothing scattered on the floor and make sure I don’t sound too defensive. “I am serious. Mike arranged it. It’s a great opport—”

“And you had no say in it? You were completely powerless and at Mike’s mercy? Give me a break, you saw Grayson again and probably caved the second he smiled at you.”

My battle to stay calm gets harder as I hug my knees to my chest. “I did not.”

Her tone is oddly resigned. “Uh-huh, sure.”

Grayson appears at the doorway, and I nearly hang up on Gretchen when he grins at me.
