When Elke decided to take up beekeeping, it took a couple of attempts before bees would accept her. We tried a swarm first, and then a feral hive that took hours in the sun to cut out of a tree, but no luck—the bees would not stay.

Bees have finally accepted her and she now has a couple of hives perched in her garden paradise in eastern Sydney. Elke is an active member of the Sydney branch of the bee club and a horticulturist with a keen interest in plants and trees. Being a beekeeper, this is good knowledge to have up your sleeve. Her work as an arborist has her looking at trees regularly, and she can now keep an eye out for bees as well.
