Prepare for Uncertainty

While it’s great to be prepared, you also need to recognize that when you are in the wilderness, you should expect the unexpected. Weather changes, trails wash out, equipment breaks, you get lost, or someone gets hurt, leaving you feeling anxious and maybe a little frightened. It’s like any stressful situation that can cause your heart rate to increase and your palms to sweat. It can also compromise your ability to make well-thought-out decisions. Take a moment to calm down. The founder of the National Outdoor Leadership School, Paul Petzoldt, used to say, “Smoke a cigarette.” That was in the 1960s, before the danger of tobacco was widely known, but his point was to pause, breathe, and let that initial adrenaline rush pass. Except in some very extreme situations, once the initial crisis is over, you usually have a few minutes to make a plan before you have to react. Too often when we react in the heat of the moment, we are irrational and don’t make smart decisions. So slow down, pause, and think about the best way to deal with the surprise turn of events.
