ALGIERS POINT, NEW ORLEANS
âChloeâs boy is Lukeâs,â Gabe declared almost immediately after he, Brennan, Connor, Carson, and Luke had all gathered in Lukeâs small kitchen to crack open the first beers of the afternoon.
Luke choked on his beer mid-swallow and blinked rapidly. âDude. What the fuck is wrong with you, saying shit like that? I donât know ifââ
âWait, hold the fucking phone,â Carson cut in, his hazel eyes narrowing to snarky-as-fuck slits. âItâs about time we have a real fucking talk about this whole kid situation.â He waved his beer at the other four men, staring at Luke. âWhy is he five years old, and this the first weâre hearing about him?â He leaned toward Luke, eyebrows high, a shit-eating grin pulling across his face. âDid you pull the same shit as your pappy, or did you fuck up badly enough that she decided you werenât allowed in the picture?â
âOkay, first of all, fuck you,â Luke retorted. âI didnât invite you here.â He swung his beer bottle around to point at Brennan. âHe invited you because he knows you get pouty about being left out all the time. I donât owe you any kind of explanation for anything, bruh.â
âIâm happy to explain,â Gabe clipped, crossing the kitchen to open the back door and stand just outside while he lit up a cigarette. Luke groaned for a lot of reasons and leaned against the kitchen counter, taking a long swig of beer. Gunner pushed himself off the kitchen floor and moseyed to plop his ass down right next to the back door to bask in a wide, white sunbeam. âChloe and Luke hooked up at a Christmas party Mia threw about six years ago, and then she skipped town, and none of us heard from her until she showed up here a couple of weeks ago with her kid.â
âYeah, you mentioned that part,â Carson said. âBut how do you know for sure heâs Lukeâs?â
Gabe paused to take a drag and blew the smoke toward the backyard, then looked at the group again. âBecause he didnât wrap his shit. Do the fucking math.â
The rest of the men simultaneously sucked in a hiss through their teeth, each of them wearing a cringing expression.
âCorporal,â Connor said patronizingly. âI donât know what the first fucking thing was that they told you jarheads, but we were immediately warned to always wrap our shit.â
âThey did tell us that, but by then most of us already fucking knew to do that,â Brennan replied. âThe first time I ever didnât wrap my shit was last fucking year with the woman I married.â
âI always wrap my shit!â Luke snapped. âAlways.â
âExcept that one time six years ago, and now youâve got a kid,â Gabe clapped back.
âLook,â Luke said, eyeballing each of them one by one. âI donât know that heâs mine. I also canât ask her about that yet because I havenât even seen her since that party, and sheâs got a bunch of other bad shit going on.â
Gabe arched a dark brow at Luke, pointing at him with the cig.
