ALGIERS POINT, NEW ORLEANS

“Chloe’s boy is Luke’s,” Gabe declared almost immediately after he, Brennan, Connor, Carson, and Luke had all gathered in Luke’s small kitchen to crack open the first beers of the afternoon.

Luke choked on his beer mid-swallow and blinked rapidly. “Dude. What the fuck is wrong with you, saying shit like that? I don’t know if—”

“Wait, hold the fucking phone,” Carson cut in, his hazel eyes narrowing to snarky-as-fuck slits. “It’s about time we have a real fucking talk about this whole kid situation.” He waved his beer at the other four men, staring at Luke. “Why is he five years old, and this the first we’re hearing about him?” He leaned toward Luke, eyebrows high, a shit-eating grin pulling across his face. “Did you pull the same shit as your pappy, or did you fuck up badly enough that she decided you weren’t allowed in the picture?”

“Okay, first of all, fuck you,” Luke retorted. “I didn’t invite you here.” He swung his beer bottle around to point at Brennan. “He invited you because he knows you get pouty about being left out all the time. I don’t owe you any kind of explanation for anything, bruh.”

“I’m happy to explain,” Gabe clipped, crossing the kitchen to open the back door and stand just outside while he lit up a cigarette. Luke groaned for a lot of reasons and leaned against the kitchen counter, taking a long swig of beer. Gunner pushed himself off the kitchen floor and moseyed to plop his ass down right next to the back door to bask in a wide, white sunbeam. “Chloe and Luke hooked up at a Christmas party Mia threw about six years ago, and then she skipped town, and none of us heard from her until she showed up here a couple of weeks ago with her kid.”

“Yeah, you mentioned that part,” Carson said. “But how do you know for sure he’s Luke’s?”

Gabe paused to take a drag and blew the smoke toward the backyard, then looked at the group again. “Because he didn’t wrap his shit. Do the fucking math.”

The rest of the men simultaneously sucked in a hiss through their teeth, each of them wearing a cringing expression.

“Corporal,” Connor said patronizingly. “I don’t know what the first fucking thing was that they told you jarheads, but we were immediately warned to always wrap our shit.”

“They did tell us that, but by then most of us already fucking knew to do that,” Brennan replied. “The first time I ever didn’t wrap my shit was last fucking year with the woman I married.”

“I always wrap my shit!” Luke snapped. “Always.”

“Except that one time six years ago, and now you’ve got a kid,” Gabe clapped back.

“Look,” Luke said, eyeballing each of them one by one. “I don’t know that he’s mine. I also can’t ask her about that yet because I haven’t even seen her since that party, and she’s got a bunch of other bad shit going on.”

Gabe arched a dark brow at Luke, pointing at him with the cig.
