Chapter 9

Corina

“When are you starting the new job?” Liam asks as he turns into a side street, driving past perfectly manicured lawns and gorgeous front gardens. We’re having Sunday lunch with our parents at the family home. They expected us there fifteen minutes ago, and I know that while Mom will hug us and not even breathe a word about our tardiness, Dad won’t let it go so easily.

“Monday. Bright and early. I have to attend training first thing in the morning on both Monday and Tuesday.”

“I see. And how do you feel about working with Kurt?” He keeps his eyes on the road as we make a turn into our old street.

I shrug, watching him and trying to decipher his expression. It’s no use; he has a great poker face.

“I don’t feel anything. Sure, I’m happy I won’t be working for a stranger, but other than that I don’t really care that it’s him per se.” I know that every word coming out of my mouth is a lie, but I keep thinking that maybe if I repeat them often enough, they’ll come true. Sort of like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“I see.” He nods as he parks the car by the curb of our parents’ stately home.

I scowl. “What do you mean, ‘I see’? Why do you keep repeating that?”

“No reason, Cora. I just want you to be careful.”

My heart thumps. “Be careful? Of what? Kurt?” I can hardly believe what he’s saying. What could I possibly have to worry about when it comes to Kurt?

“No. It’s not that. It’s just…that whole firm atmosphere is sort of sleazy. A lot of the more senior people think they can take advantage, know what I mean?” He looks me right in the eyes, and I can tell his concern is real.

“Yeah, I know, Liam,” I say quickly. “But don’t worry. I can handle myself. Besides, Kurt’s there to watch out for me, too. You don’t have to worry.” Shit! Why did I have to bring him up? I catch Liam’s expression as I get out of the car, and he seems uneasy.

“All right, just be careful. That’s all I’m saying,” he mutters as he slams the car door. Almost immediately, a bright smile replaces his scowl as we approach the house, and I force a smile on to my face as well.

Mom greets us the same way she always has, with a strong hug and a huge smile. “Hey, my darlings! How are you? So glad to see you! Come on in,” she exclaims, and I can’t help but smile.

Our mother is the warmest, most generous woman you’d ever have the luck to meet. Even though she owns a beautiful house in a great neighborhood, she’s never had any airs about her. She doesn’t think we’re special, or necessarily better than anyone else just because of the material advantages we have.

Her humble upbringing ensured she didn’t take anything for granted, and she always seems to appreciate everything. She’s a couple of inches shorter than me, a bit stocky, and beautiful.
