THE MISSING FATHER

Archibald Davis was her father and the world didn’t know. Her mother had been so infatuated with him that she kept his last name. In retrospect it couldn’t have been sadder. He’d thought that she was on the pill and they were having the unprotected version of a good time. Cleopatra was an accident baby and it molded her relationships with men. She couldn’t be functional with them, because she’d never seen a healthy bond.

At the time her mother met Archibald he was nothing. The huge mega church minister people see today is the result of trial and error. She saw the potential in a man with nothing more than a storefront church and a dream. His sermons moved her to change and turning her life around was the only option.

Archibald had been something of a hustler himself. Before finding God and growing his ministry, he ran the streets like a three legged alley cat. Archibald had charisma, transforming slick street talk into inspirational words. It turned out that powerful men of the church were equally desired to goons in the street. Archibald wasn’t able to contain himself, chasing church cat like atomic dog.

His past was frequently brought up in the media. All he did was admit to his faults and vow to never do it again. He found a more media friendly wife, leaving his player ways behind for the socially acceptable life. Since that day he never saw Cleopatra again. It was like an ugly stain on his history that he wanted to wash his hands of.

Sometimes Cleopatra would see him on television and he would stop everything she was doing. Who was this man who moved so many people yet had a forgotten his first family? In the internet age they had to have dirt on him. Then again he admitted his faults. Half the fun is watching someone deny the most negative parts of themselves. Spinning events in his favor was a gift of Archibald’s. He’d been doing it on the street for years. Today he’s worth millions, and so is Cleopatra. Like father, like daughter. The only difference is public perception. In many ways Archibald has changed. In other ways he’s stayed the same.

That night she tried not to think of him. The more she tried not to, the more the image of him played over in her head. It was like a bad movie she couldn’t remove from her mind. The next morning she was glued to the bed like a seven hundred pound woman. She couldn’t pull herself from between the sheets for anything. The phone rang and she ignored it. The message left on the answering machine was enough to arouse her suspicion.

“Mama passed this morning Cleo. You know she’s been sick. I don’t have to tell you who this is. It’s your sister. The funeral is going to be on Tuesday. We expect to see you there. Call me.”

Cleopatra sat motionless, unaware what to do or say. She hadn’t seen her mother, sister, or any of her family for fifteen years.
