Chapter Eleven

Noni

“Hello?” I spoke in the receiver. My eyes burned, and my head ached. I stayed up half the night with wandering thoughts, and it was still dark outside my window.

Upon rising up, a tiny arm held me back, and I smiled. Jalen did wander in here, didn’t he? His arrival at around 1:00 AM had been welcome, as his mom needed him too.

Rubbing his arm, I tried to focus on what woke me up. My cellphone rang, so I answered it. At least, I thought it rang. There was no return voice in my ear.

“Hello?” I attempted again but still no sound. I started to hang up.

“Noni?”

I pulled the phone back to my ear. “Hi? Hello?”

“Noni…”

My breath left in small wisps, and I hugged my child tighter. There was no way Asa would be calling me. Not after what happened. I dampened my lips. “What do you… What do you want, Asa? What’s going on? Why are you calling?”

Because with the way we left things, he definitely wouldn’t be. He basically told me to lawyer up, that he’d be contacting his legal representation, so I probably should as well.

That’s because you hurt him.

I closed my eyes, knowing my role in all this. My immediate instinct after what he’d said was to call him, but in the end, I stepped back. I had hurt him, which was why I believed what he said about lawyering up might have been a gut reaction to what I’d done. I betrayed him. I kept his kid away.

I only hoped his threat in the end was empty.

I prayed that it was, and the fact he was calling so soon now might be a good indicator of that. I listened on the line, no other words said. Asa was silent, and that only had me on edge. “Asa, I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m thinking I should probably hang up. What happened tonight—”

“No.”

The word had been so abrupt, so… tortured.

“I mean, please don’t. Please…”

Holding the phone tightly to my ear, the call became less about what happened between us and shifted to what was currently happening now. He didn’t sound right, not at all.

I slid Jalen’s arm away, moving to the edge of the bed. “What’s going on, Asa? Are you okay?”

Again more silence, but then he spoke my name after that. It’d been light…

It’d been enough.

I rose from the bed. “Where are you?”

His voice didn’t come quick enough, and eventually, I got what I needed out of him. He was by the side of the road for some reason, and he was also by himself.

My small boy whined as I picked him up moments later. Sleeping, he didn’t want to be lifted from my bed.

He buried his face into my neck, his cranky face on. “Mama?”

“It’s okay, baby.” I put my hand to his head, padding my way down the hall with him in my arms. I got Jalen to his room quickly, and he didn’t even stir when I placed him under his own bedding.
