Chapter Eleven
Noni
âHello?â I spoke in the receiver. My eyes burned, and my head ached. I stayed up half the night with wandering thoughts, and it was still dark outside my window.
Upon rising up, a tiny arm held me back, and I smiled. Jalen did wander in here, didnât he? His arrival at around 1:00 AM had been welcome, as his mom needed him too.
Rubbing his arm, I tried to focus on what woke me up. My cellphone rang, so I answered it. At least, I thought it rang. There was no return voice in my ear.
âHello?â I attempted again but still no sound. I started to hang up.
âNoni?â
I pulled the phone back to my ear. âHi? Hello?â
âNoniâ¦â
My breath left in small wisps, and I hugged my child tighter. There was no way Asa would be calling me. Not after what happened. I dampened my lips. âWhat do you⦠What do you want, Asa? Whatâs going on? Why are you calling?â
Because with the way we left things, he definitely wouldnât be. He basically told me to lawyer up, that heâd be contacting his legal representation, so I probably should as well.
Thatâs because you hurt him.
I closed my eyes, knowing my role in all this. My immediate instinct after what heâd said was to call him, but in the end, I stepped back. I had hurt him, which was why I believed what he said about lawyering up might have been a gut reaction to what Iâd done. I betrayed him. I kept his kid away.
I only hoped his threat in the end was empty.
I prayed that it was, and the fact he was calling so soon now might be a good indicator of that. I listened on the line, no other words said. Asa was silent, and that only had me on edge. âAsa, I donât know whatâs going on, but Iâm thinking I should probably hang up. What happened tonightââ
âNo.â
The word had been so abrupt, so⦠tortured.
âI mean, please donât. Pleaseâ¦â
Holding the phone tightly to my ear, the call became less about what happened between us and shifted to what was currently happening now. He didnât sound right, not at all.
I slid Jalenâs arm away, moving to the edge of the bed. âWhatâs going on, Asa? Are you okay?â
Again more silence, but then he spoke my name after that. Itâd been lightâ¦
Itâd been enough.
I rose from the bed. âWhere are you?â
His voice didnât come quick enough, and eventually, I got what I needed out of him. He was by the side of the road for some reason, and he was also by himself.
My small boy whined as I picked him up moments later. Sleeping, he didnât want to be lifted from my bed.
He buried his face into my neck, his cranky face on. âMama?â
âItâs okay, baby.â I put my hand to his head, padding my way down the hall with him in my arms. I got Jalen to his room quickly, and he didnât even stir when I placed him under his own bedding.
