War

Introduction

While there was an inherent link between war and religion in Aztec society, war also served essential economic functions for the Aztec empire. First, it was through war that the Mexica of Tenochtitlan were able to conquer so many territories that then supplied tribute, in both goods and services, to the city. As an island city, Tenochtitlan was not economically self-sufficient and relied on outside tribute for its survival. Second, service in the military via participation in warfare was a means of social mobility for many Aztec men. The more prowess an Aztec man exhibited on the battlefield, the more advancement he could experience in life. Moreover, successful warriors were gifted with special clothing that communicated their superior status to others. This link between success on the battlefield and social rank made service in the military appealing for many Aztec men, especially commoners who had few other paths to social and career advancement.
