CHAPTER 8

A pair of warm lips on Deirdre’s forehead awakened her from slumber. She kept her eyes closed as Azrael traced his fingers across her collarbone before running the back of his hand down her cheek. “Be careful, reaper.” She smiled. “A girl could get used to this.”

“I hope you do.” He pressed his lips to hers.

Sweet Lilith, how she loved his warmth. As a vampire, she’d grown accustomed to being cold as a corpse. Azrael was warmer than any man she’d ever been with, and she never imagined how much it would appeal to her. How everything about him would be so…wonderful. He was kind, sweet, tough when he needed to be, but he was also in touch with his own emotions—and hers—which was hella sexy in a man. She fluttered her lids open and found him smiling at her.

“Good morning, beautiful.”

“Morning?” She stretched her arms over her head. “I think you mean night.”

“It’s eight a.m. We’ve been asleep for hours.”

“No way.” He had to be joking. “I never fall asleep while the moon is still out. Vampires sleep in the daylight hours.”

“The sun doesn’t shine in Purgatory.” He rubbed his hand over the sexy scruff that had formed on his chin. “It must’ve messed with your internal clock.”

Azrael rose, and she blinked as she took in his fully clothed form. “Are you going somewhere?”

He flashed a heart-melting smile. “I’ve already been. You’ll have to stay in the Underworld until darkness falls topside, so I brought you some supplies.” He set a fabric bag on the bed and began pulling out items as he spoke. “A laptop in case you need to get some work done. I assume you have everything saved to the cloud?”

She sat up, letting the satin sheets fall away from her body, grinning as his gaze dipped to her breasts. “Of course.”

“I also got you a bottle of blood. As much as I enjoyed you using me as a snack last night, we better not flood your system with angel blood. I don’t know what effect it might have until you get used to it.”

“Aw, but you make such a tasty snack. Sexy too.” She laughed. “But I suppose you’re right. You’re my first angel, so we better be sure I don’t sprout wings before we try that again. Though it would be absolutely fabulous if I did.”

“I have a soul to reap and a few therapy sessions to run this morning, but I’ve cleared my schedule for the afternoon. When I’m finished, I’ll give you that grand tour I promised.”

“Sounds wonderful. Mind if I use your shower?”

“Make yourself at home.” He strode to the corner of the bedroom and took his scythe from its stand.

“It’s such a beautiful instrument.” Deirdre stood, her fingers twitching with the urge to touch it. To just run her hand along the dull side of the blade one time. It was designed to sever souls from the living. She was undead, which was entirely different. She could get run over by a Mac truck, and as long as it didn’t pierce her heart or behead her, she’d recover.
