CHAPTER 12

Leshia

A predator’s scent snaps me awake, and I gasp for breath, only to see Axzel with his shirt off. He unbuttons his pants, the sides of his button fly blue jeans spilling open to reveal a thick mass covering his sculpted groin, which pulls an animalistic growl from my throat. Not only that, but my wolf is way past preening because she has more faith in this wolf taking her as a mate than I’ve ever felt from her, distracting me from the faint scent of Cain’s blood on Axzel’s clothing. Guilt pushes me to tell him what I did, but my wolf reins me in. She knows that it’s life or death of a she-wolf in her needing. Not from the curse this time. If I don’t breed tonight, other wolves will find me, fight over me, and I could end up dead. My daughter could be left without her mother. I shove back the new information I’m sitting on regarding the sheriff and him selling the property to David. I promise myself to come clean after tonight and once I talk to the sheriff.

A wave of Cain’s rotten-egg scent hits me.

Honestly, when I spot a splash of rust-colored stain dirt on Axzel’s pant leg, I wonder if he ventured outside. If he did what was necessary. Axzel doesn’t trust easily. We’re still feeling each other out. But I have to ask, “Did you kill Cain?

He shakes his head, averting his gaze. “No.”

He still won’t look at me, but I let it go for now, my inner wolf begging me to put the demon’s threat or death aside. If I’m honest, I regret not killing the demon. I’d wanted to, but then he held answers to David’s death, and I couldn’t take him out for fear of losing my last tie to the truth.

Then Axzel showed up with the law before I could make a move to extract the information out of Cain. But I remind myself that it’s because Axzel showed up that Hunter wasn’t harmed. Cain and I were locked in a checkmate. One of us was going to die. I’m so glad it wasn’t me…

“Don’t you worry about anything.” He smooths his hands over my cheeks. “You’re safe with me. Always.”

I may be protected from an attack at the moment, but it’s not Cain or his death I’m worrying about. Axzel’s body is plumped with mating hormones as much as mine.

My wolf smiles and flips her tail. Yeah, we’re not in imminent danger and she knows it. She’s as hungry to feel the weight of Axzel’s body on top of her as I am. To feel his heat permeate our bodies. To feel his mouth kissing a trail down to the wet folds between my legs.

There’s no denying that when I’m scared I will no longer fight alone. That when I’m eager to mate, he’ll be as willing and ready as I am to do what’s necessary to protect me. To protect my daughter.

Axzel’s eyes turn a vivid blue, the color of his wolf, the piercing stare primal and lust-filled.
