CHAPTER TEN

She knew he was there.

Even though she hadn't heard or seen any sign of Axel, Maggie had been following something—call it an instinct—that directed her along the path behind the house before splitting off into the woods. As she walked, the feeling that guided her grew stronger, a hum of vibration she couldn't quite pinpoint.

As she'd walked, she'd taken a sip from the bottle and made a face when it burned going down. People actually liked this shit? Still, she could use a little courage, even the kind that came in a bottle, so she'd sipped a little more, calling Axel's name from time to time.

When he finally responded, he couldn't have been more than fifty feet away, sitting with his back to a shed made from lumber so old it looked like a hard stare would knock it down. Maggie knew he'd heard her coming. Hell, he'd probably been tracking her since she left the house, given the racket she'd made plowing through the bushy undergrowth and low-hanging branches.

She was out of breath by the time she reached him, partly from exertion but mainly from that humming feeling that had spread through her body, melting her insides with feverish lust.

"Hi," she said, trying to sound casual.

All she got in response was a grunt.

The clothes that had been neat and clean the last time she saw him were soiled now, wrinkled and streaked with dirt. His wavy dark hair held bits of bark and leaves. And his hands…

Those big, powerful hands were folded like a choirboy's over his lap, but even they couldn't conceal the bulge under the denim of his jeans. Inches away, the whiskey bottle was upturned, empty.

Maggie decided to try humor.

"Looks like I came made just in time," she said, offering him her bottle, flinching slightly as his frown only deepened. After a moment, he yanked it out of her hands, his eyes swimming with powerful emotion. Something that wasn't quite anger, but wasn't glad to see her either.

"You're welcome," Maggie said sarcastically after he took a drink that would have knocked her over. When he still didn't speak, she sat down on the ground with her legs crossed. Not the most ladylike position when you were wearing a skirt that barely covered your ass, but she figured they were well past first impressions.

"Thanks," he muttered, capping the bottle. "Though I believe this is my whiskey."

Maggie huffed with frustration. Axel seemed determined to turn everything she said or did into an indictment—of her judgment, her actions, her mere presence. Her thin veil of confidence gave way, leaving her feeling more exposed than ever.

But she'd promised herself that she would try.

"Am I really that bad? That you can't stand even stand to be around me sober?"

Axel seemed taken aback. "This is isn't about you. I mean, it is…but it isn't."

Oh, well, that explained it. "I think I'm starting to understand why you don't talk much."

Axel growled and took another swig, wiping his mouth on his muscular forearm. "You're making my point.
