When Myth Becomes Reality

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Though our house felt like a safe haven, we barely went outside, as it always felt like there were hundreds of shadows watching us. We saw them from the corners of our eyes, flying through the air, from street to street. We closed the curtains so the spirits could not watch what we were doing. Our house became our sanctuary, our secret hiding place.

As an archaeologist, I was focused on the visible world, but now my eyes were opened to an invisible realm. Without realizing it, my perspective on life had changed. The unbelievable became believable. The impossible became real. Every part of the Bible became truth and even more. This was not about intellectualism, theology or science, but about seeing life through new eyes. The spirit realm had come to life. I had received a new worldview where God reigned, Jesus was King and angels and demons existed. I felt like every story that I formerly thought was just myth suddenly became real.

Seeing in the spirit realm, both the good and the bad things, woke me up to a new reality. It changed my entire perspective on life and the world around me, yet I was still living in a physical world, struggling to get back to normal. People tried to talk to me about regular things like birthdays or clothes or food, but I was no longer interested. I’d go into stores looking for new clothes only to find they’d lost their appeal.

One day we went on a family trip to a children’s theme park. It was supposed to be a fun day to get our minds off the things we were dealing with at home. But as we walked through the park, I noticed many of the rides were based on fairy tales, and everywhere I went I saw images of witches tricking humans to get into their homes. It gave me the chills. I wondered: Why did everything that happened to us feel like a fairy tale? At the end of the day we visited a show in the park, and I saw real raven hovering over an actor dressed as a witch. This was supposed to be for children. All the hairs on my arms stood up straight. I got up and ran out of the park, horrified.

When we came home I turned on the TV and tried to find something relaxing to watch. But there too, everything I saw reminded me of what had happened to us. I quickly turned it off. How was this possible? The same stories showed up all over the world. And not just the universal stories of the flood and the tree of life, but also the themes of many books, movies and television shows. From Disney to the classics, from big blockbusters to ancient myths, there was something tying them all together.
