Chapter Ten

“So, how did it go?”

Raven jumped at the sound of Ben’s voice next to her. Turning to her left, she saw him standing there, his hands tucked into the pockets of his leather jacket, his expression hidden behind those infernal shades of his. She’d been so lost in thought, she didn’t even hear him approach.

“Fine.” She sighed, leaning back against the wall she’d been resting against when she’d gone outside to make the call. The cell phone in her hand was still warm to the touch from use. “The council is going to meet tonight to discuss my request. I should hear back from them by tomorrow.”

“I see.” Ben leaned his shoulder against the wall, positioning his body sideways so that he was directly facing her. “We’ve added a twenty-four hour watch, just as you suggested, and no one is allowed to go outside alone.” His mouth twisted into a grimace, as he glanced back toward the bear who was currently on guard duty. Ben knew that if they slipped out of sight, he would be on their asses in an instant. “Now we just have to wait and see which one of us is the first to break that rule, and end up dead because of me.”

“Don’t say that.” Raven reached out to touch him, but Ben stepped back, evading her. The defensive gesture hurt more than she expected, and she stiffened, allowing her hand to drop back down to her side.

“Don’t touch me,” he growled, his voice tight. “I... I don’t deserve it.”

Raven blinked. “What?”

Ben turned away, his jaw flexing as he gazed out into the street. “Whenever you touch me, all the pain and anger inside me melts away. I don’t deserve to feel peace right now, not when my presence is causing so much turmoil amongst the clan. I deserve to feel the pain for what I’ve caused.”

“Oh, is that right?” Raven understood what he was saying, she really did, but the note of despair in his tone lit off a spark inside her that quickly ignited into simmering anger. “Maybe this would be a good time to cue up the violin music then, or for me to whip out my tiny fiddle.”

Ben whipped his head around to face her again, his dark eyebrows winging up across his forehead. “What the hell?”

“You heard what I said.” Raven scowled at him, her hands balling into fists at her side. “You think you’re so noble, sacrificing yourself for the common good. The truth is, that nobody wants you to do that, least of all yourself. And instead of being grateful that we’re all working so hard so that you don’t have to throw your life away, you’re moping around instead.” His mouth dropped open, and she couldn’t help but enjoy the flood of satisfaction at his reaction. “Maybe I can’t stop you from feeling sorry for yourself, but that doesn’t mean I have to stand here and mope around with you. I’ll see you later.”

Ben stood stock-still, gaping after Raven as she sauntered down the steps, just outside the front entrance of the Den.
