Chapter 5

The ride home was silent. The guitars and singing voices of what I assumed was his favorite band filled his car. I could still feel Kyle’s kiss lingering on my lips. I could smell his scent, which now permeated my own clothing, my flesh. Dear God, I wanted to smile. I felt it creeping up on me, but I also was very worried. I was living with this man already, things could get out of hand, then I’d really be out on my ass. No. Things had already gotten out of hand. I never wanted my family to know what was going on in my new life away from them, and now Kyle and I were going to dinner with them! As a couple! Why did he do that?! It had to stop. I had to find a way to back off of whatever was going on.

I noticed that the car was slowing down; we had arrived at our destination. The garage door rose and we rode up the driveway and into the garage. Kyle parked and killed the engine, but neither of us moved.

“You’re quiet,”Kyle said, breaking the silence between us.

“Err, um…”I didn’t know what to say to distance myself from my own feelings and what had happened between us.“Thanks for coming to my rescue back there, I have a hard time sticking up for myself sometimes. I owe you one.”

“Is that what you think that was, a favor?”Kyle questioned with narrowed eyes.

“Well, wasn’t it? You said,‘Go with it,’so I did.”

“I’ve got to admit, when I saw them there talking to you the way they were, it really pissed me off, but I’ve done you no favors. In fact, I may have been too selfish. Have I ever made it any secret that I’m attracted to you?”

“No but—I can’t believe that you made my mother think that we’re a couple!”I blurted out. At the time I guess I was fine with it, but after the dust had settled, the situation didn’t look so good. Kyle burst out laughing, I could only manage a puzzled look on my face.“I mean it. I live with you and your sister, for goodness sake. My family is very conservative. It is not acceptable for me to be shacked up with some man they’ve never met. In my family, you do not live with a man who is not your husband. We can’t just go off pretending to be in a relationship for shits and giggles!”

Kyle scowled.“Pretending? What do you think it is we’ve been doing for the last two months? Do you think I was pretending last night when I licked—”

“Whoa!”I threw my hands up to try and reason with him a little.“Things have gotten kind of serious.”

“Then we’ll take things slowly,”Kyle countered.

“Slowly? We had sex the first night we met,”I deadpanned.“Then I moved in with you the next day! Besides what about Gemma?”

“Okay, you’ve got a point there. And as for Gemma, she’ll will be just fine with it.”Kyle studied me for a second, then slapped his hands down on his lap.
